It sounds like you may be having the same problem as the person in this thread (here on the Hair Color board):  can't get hair color to stick

I answered in that post about softening gray hair (getting resistant gray to open its cuticle), it may be that you need to try one of those methods first, only on the gray hair to get it to absorb the dye.

"Ash" dye that is brown usually (though maybe not always) has a green base, so that shouldn't have come out red in theory.  If softening doesn't help, I would call the company that makes the dye of your choice and ask them which of their dyes they recommend for hair that always comes out red.  They don't write the base color of their dyes on the boxes, so there's no other way to predict with boxed dye, but these companies are usually helpful.
They may even be able to offer you a "resistant gray softening" tip that they know works with their dye specifically.

Lead Acetate for coloring hair: *Don't Use Products with These in them.. Use Metalex by Clairol to remove metal from hair.

*-RD Hair Coloring & Groomer, Creme Formula for Men (LT Laboratories, Brookline Mass.)

*-Youthhair Creme, Hair Dressing and Conditioner for Men and Women, (MajesticDrug Company, Inc, Bronx, N.Y.)

Hi,

I am a guy with "medium" brown hair. I have a lot of gray, so I started coloring my hair several months ago. I want it to stay the same color, brown, but without the gray. But I can't find a color that does not result in red highlights in my hair. I originally used Clairol Gray Solutions, I think I tried medium brown and then medium ash brown the next time which I thought would not result in red highlights, but they both gave me red in my hair. The next time I colored it, just a few days ago, I tried Clairol Hydrience (I got light ash brown because the color on the box looked like my hair) and I still got the red highlights.

Is there any brand/color that will not give me the red highlights? It just looks fake and doesn't look like my natural hair.  Thanks.

P.S. When I first colored my hair, it started falling out pretty easy. This may be due to the fact that I was previously using Grecian Formula...maybe when it mixed together with the color, it had a bad effect or something. But the Hydrience didn't make it fall out (by the time I used the Hydrience, I had not been using the Grecian Formula for months).

Thanks.
