In shampoos there are some potentially drying detergents to avoid: ammonium laureth/lauryl sulfate, sodium LAURYL (not laureth--that`s the good one) sulfate, the TEAs, ammonium xylenosulfate. There are a few others but these are the most common. Some ingredients such as acrylates and other hairspray-type fixatives can build up on your hair.

In conditioners, it`s hard to find really damaging ingredients since they aren`t cleaning your hair or otherwise stripping out oils. You can run the risk of buildup from silicones (dimethicone, cyclomethicone, anything ending in "cone") but these won`t damage your hair. You can deep cleanse once a week to remove build up, and silicones are one of the few conditioning agents that can cling to hair even after you`ve rinsed in the shower. They increase shine and softness and my hair is very receptive to them.

Collagen, elastin, panthenol and virtually any protein, regardless of its source, coats the hair shaft and fills in the gaps between cuticles. This makes for a smooth, healthy look and feel. Ingredients that coat the hair shaft do not make it weaker; in fact, they help guard against future damage to some extent.

Also good are the quaterniums...sterealkonium something, benalkamomium, etc. I have a list at home but I`m at my office and I honestly can`t remember all their names or spellings :p

Something else to note with conditioners: Not all alcohol is drying! I hear this all the time: one of my friends picks up a conditioner, sees the words stearyl alcohol and throws it back on the shelf, saying "Sheesh this will destroy my hair!" This is simply not true. Yes, SD Alcohol 40 and others found in hairsprays do dry quickly, taking a bit of your hair`s moisture with them. BUT, Cetyl, Stearyl and Cetearyl alcohol (a mixture of the first two) are actually GOOD for conditioning your hair. They are emollients that both thicken the product and impart shine and softness. Why else would they appear in virtually every moisturizing conditioner on the market, from Redken to Salon Selectives? So those are more ingredients you don`t have to fear. :-)

I know that you should stay away from alcohols, cones, and sulfates their pretty harsh on the hair.
Also stay away from castor oil, mineral oil and bee wax this will coat hair and make it weaker. I hope this helps.

Some GREAT products I swear by:

*L`oreal Nature`s Therapy Mega Moisture Shampoo A while back we had a discussion on this board about this product....it got rave reviews. I love it--it`s very rich and mild. I buy this (and many of the following products ) at Sally Beauty, if you have that.

*Phyto Systeme Hydro-Botanics Shampoo Every bit as good as L`oreal and smells like a tropical drink. Both this and the previous shampoo cleanse with mild sodium laureth sulfate.

*Aura Cherry Almond Bark Revitalizing Conditioner Extremely rich treatment for a weekly deep conditioning. One of the absolute best. Smells a LOT like licorice.

*Clairol Color Protec Daily Replenisher An excellent, rich conditioner. It makes no difference that it`s "for color-treated hair"--it`s just a very good product.

*Physique Intense Moisture Conditioner/VS Sassoon Deep Treatment Therapy I list these together because the ingredient lists are nearly identical. Both are pretty good for dry hair if you leave them on long enough.

*Got2b in therapy This one is just fun. A really unusual but enjoyable smell...and it`s pearly purple! Oh and it also works. :-)

I also use a light silicone spray to keep my hair silky after washing and conditioning. I really like Jhirmack HeatCare. It`s crazy-looking: a purple layer floats on a pink layer--but it`s great for shine and feel. I hope some of this helps....I fight dryness as well and you`re right that good products can make all the difference!

btw, I LOVE LONDON. I remember walking up out of the underground at Piccadilly and not believing how amazing that city is. Only been once but can`t wait to go back! Someday when I`m out of college and making money :-)

One shampoo that I find works the best for my long thick dark brown hair is Salon selectives. I use the color care line since I used to color my hair and it is a bit dry and frizzy due to this process What makes this shampoo so good is that you can find it anywhere, it`s cheap, and it`s one of the few drug store shelve line of shampoos that has a gentle cleansing agent (sodium laureth sulfate) which will not dry out your hair.

Just a question really..

Can anyone tell me some really good shampoo and conditioners, which are around - which`ll eventually lead my hair to less dryness, and rare splitsville?

P.S - As I`m in the UK, I`d be greatful if you can suggest something I can get here.. ;P

PP.S - I`d also find it interesting to see who uses what, and what comes ontop!

Thanky! :D
