Thanks!  One more questions...would you use 10 or 20volume developer?  I'm about 35% gray, so I think that's part of the reason why my roots are lighter?

Not sure.Permante colors have a bit of peroxide that lightens slightly.
Yet,semi may not be enough to cover it,and wash out too fast.

If it were me,I'd go with a permante.

The color shampoo:
If the ends of your hair are not reddish,I wouldnt use it on your ends.I would use it only on the parts of hair that need toning down.Because it deposits color.

Thanks for the suggestions!  I think I'm going to try just dying the roots.  That seems to be the problem area anyway, and the ends are so dark already...and getting dull.  Should I use perm or semi perm dye?  Also, what if I used that shampoo that was suggested above for the ends of my hair?

Thanks so much for all of your help!  I'm a teacher, but I'd love to go back and be a colorist.  I'd have a lot to learn, but I think it's so interesting and challenging.

I would try dying only the roots. If catydp gets the dye on the rest of the hair,it could turn out super dark on the ends and too light on the roots.
The ends would probably fade, but just so it doesnt turn out streaky looking.

I think it's fine to colour over colour, especially a dark colour.  I have done it may times in the past. Do it again in the same or slightly darker shade and concentrate on the roots. Make sure it says on the box that it covers grey.

You could try using a color depositing shampoo.I used ARTec in coco bean, and it helps minimize warmth or redness.

Unfortunately,Loreal has taken it over so now it is a new name.
Here is a link for more info:

after reading some of the archives, I decided that i'm going to try either ardell's unred, or try coloring it with an ash brown to counteract the red.  which should i try first?  is one safer than the other?

My hair is naturally med/dark ash brown with about 35% (maybe more?) gray.  I recently dyed it a permanant medium golden brown.  That's all that's been done to my roots, but previously before that I had darkend my highlighted, light brown hair to a light medium golden brown.  I decided it was too light and wanted it just a touch darker, but now I'm unhappy with the red, and my roots seem to be a little lighter than the rest of my hair.  No one else seems to notice, but I do.

I like the dark areas, but my gray's are too red.  I know I can't put color on top of color, but I'd like to tone down the reddish highlights.  Is there an easy solution to this?  I really don't want my hair to get any darker, but the red is just too much.  Thanks for any advice!!!!
