This is a common problem for people who lighten their hair when they want to go darker.
As PB said,the sun in makes hair more porous,so it grabs the color strongly (making appear quite dark at first) and then washes out very quickly.
Also permante colors have some peroxide in them too,which lightens slightly.Many on this board recommend using a semi or demi to go darker as it has no peroxide and only deposits color.
A few things you could try....
1) using a semi-perm color
2) using a COLORED protein filler so hair accepts color evenly and holds onto it better
3)use a color depositing shampoo or color glaze to help keep color from fading
I colored my hair three times in order to get the darker color to stick after having a very light blonde for years.So,you may have to do it more then once.

Hi, I've used Sun-in before too. Since it contains peroxide, it makes your hair more porous as it lightens. This can have a similar effect to bleaching your hair. Dying it a darker color over the Sun-in lightened hair will probably take a little darker but then fade out faster since porous hair doesn't hold color very well.
If the lightening isn't too dramatic, perhaps you just didn't leave the color on long enough though. Tough to say. Maybe try it again with another brand like L'oreal Preference and make sure to use a color safe shampoo and conditioner to fight fading? Good luck.

I come seeking advice. I've been using "Sun In" hair lightener for years, and I'm SICK of it. My natural color is kind of a medium ash blond, and the highlighter makes my hair a honey blond that has become brassy. Ick. It's time for a change.
I want dark hair, and I think a cool brown shade would look nice. Last year I tried to dye my hair brown, but it turned out awful (the gold color still showed through) and then it washed out entirely after a few shampoos. It was a permanent hair color, Clairol I believe. What did I do wrong?
I was just wondering if the spray highlighter could have caused the dye not to take. Is that a possibility? I was thinking that I could either 1) leave the color on for the maximum time (or longer) 2) Use a hair color brand that covers gray, because it might sick better on color resistant hair, or 3) see a professional.
If you have any tips or words of wisdom, I would be so grateful. I'm soooo sick of my hair right now, I could scream!
