The Loreal Excellence line the woman at Sally's recommended was from the professional hi-lift line for dark hair with some gray. It came in a slender, narrow box (not like the store box dyes that have a picture on it) with a tube of color enclosed, along with another small tube of intensifier that is supposed to add that extra red "boost". I would have to purchase 30 volume developer separately, which is par for the course. I've never seen anything like this color product before and I've been going to Sally's for quite a while now. Incidentally, I mentioned Wella Color Charm to her, as I've used this many times in the past with some success - except for the dark ends issue, of course. She was pushing this Loreal Excellence hi-lift color as if it was a really great product. I was and am still reluctant to take her advice, as I didn't feel that she was the "colorist in training" she claimed to be.
I'm going to use Color Oops and if I need to reapply, I will. I think I'm going to continue to use Wella Color Charm thereafter- which is what I used the last two times I colored.
Thanks for all of your help, Ally! I will certainly let you know how it turns out.

Well we all know colour doesn't lift colour. It's true that the peroxide in the developer removes a little pigment in the underlying hair, and replaces it with the artificial pigment, but I'm fairly certain this only works on virgin hair, as you said.
I was also under the impression that the L'oreal Excellence line was box hair colour? And what on earth is a colour intensifier? That just sounds like a buzz word, and is not necessary at all for hair colour. Unless it's something like a ph balancer or a protein filler, but I highly doubt that as they do not "come with" the hair colour.
For best colour results it's best to remove old colour before applying the new one. It's how celebrities go from red to brown to blonde all in a couple of weeks. If the colour remover results are too blotchy, I do believe you can apply a second time, just check the instructions.
Also for the best results (or even decent results) use a professional/salon supply colour with the appropriate developer strength. They won't come in a box with a picture of a redhead or whatever on the front, and you'll need to by the developer separately. You're lucky you have a sally's (what I wouldn't give for one, let me tell you) but you can also buy online. Wella's Colour Charm is an amazing line and highly recommended by the pros. http://www.wellausa.com/consumer/products_consumer/american_classics/color_charm_permanent/index.jsp
Also, don't always trust the sales girl or "colorist in training". Sometimes I think they just bs us.
Good luck and let us know what you decide.

Hello! Please take a moment to read my thread from Feb. 13th, subject: "Only the top is red" to get an understanding of my situation, before responding to this latest inquiry.
I went to the beauty supply store to purchase Color Oops, as I was going there anyway to purchase hair color to use afterward. The woman who rung up my order (who claimed to be a colorist in training) told me not to use Color Oops under any circomestances. She told me that I will be sorry if I use this, citing that my hair will lift to a brassy copper-tone, and once the red color is applied on top of that, it will only be slightly less of a "disaster", as it will be very uneven - she claims. Her recommendation instead was to purchase Loreal Excellence (Professional line) high-lift red for dark hair in Red Fire. She claimed that the high-lift color mixed with 30 volume developer (making sure to add in the color intensifier that comes along with the color), will make me the rich medium/auburn red that I so crave and that it will be pretty much an even tone, with the ends perhaps a tad darker, but for the most part even. This sounds too good to be true to me.... Especially because of the fact that I have previous color on my hair. This might work for virgin dark hair, but not mine. At least I don't think so....
Any thoughts that you may have to share on this is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
