My hair is light brown blonde, so I went out immediately to make the transition. I bought moose since my hair is fine to give it volume. If you are light medium brown, you're gonna have to bleach it (with
hair bleach, not cleanser bleach), then tone it with a violet toner
(because after bleach it will come out yellow and you will need to
counter the yellow to get that nice ash blonde-violet counters
yellow).  You could use "girl's dye", there is no difference in men's
and women's hair.  But you will need a good bit of lift to get to
blonde, that's why I said bleach.  A box of blonde dye the color of
patrick swayzee's hair is not going to give you that shade of blonde in
one go, likely just orange.  

Chemicals are tricky business, I would suggest you go to a pro and let
them do it, as it would be much easier.  If you do this yourself, do
test strands of everything (I know its hard, as you want to do it all
right now, but you could burn your hair off to the real "breaking
point" so you must be careful).
