Balenciaga:  I'm happy that you're happy with your hair, however, you won't know how your natural hair will faire with extensions in until you get them removed for the first time and see the state of your natural hair.

In my experience with clients, most people tolerate extensions very well, but some have hair so fine and weak any type of extension will break it or pull out at the root.  I myself fall in that category.

I thought I was having a disaster when I got mone at first, but now Im so happy with them.  My hair with the GL is like Reese Witherspoon, the pics you see of her in the yellow awards dress. and honestly I love them.  Im going on over a month with NO problems whatsoever.  I use Aveda and Bumble and Bumble~
I was a mess at first because I wasnt very educated about them, but with the help of everyone here, and the stylist who did them [she actually ended up helping me a ton more] Im happy.  The down fall is the $$$, but I get compliments 24/7.

I'm pretty sure 3000 is the max rec dosage for Biotin.  I read a few years ago Jessica Simpson saying she takes 1000mcg of Biotin a day to grow her hair out (that was before she admitted to having extensions however) and I just recently heard a doctor (Dr. Oz maybe?) talking about how you can take up to 3000mcg so I think you are right on.

I took extremly good care of my GL and the damage was way beyond anything I could have imagined. I put them in for length to have my real hair grow out, and I ended up after the removal of cuttin off almost 3 inches beacause of the damage and my hair was shorter then how it was with the install. The only healthy method I have had with extensions ( for me ) was the hair locs. I recently took out my install completly and my hair was healthy and longer the goal I wanted to acheive in the first place.
Currant method Hair locs.

i would totally do clip-ins, but at the present time, my hair is soooo short, i couldn't do clip-ins. i'm also kind of an idiot at putting them in.

i'm not sure what i would do with the top part too. i'm thinking it would look mullet-y unless i had a top piece. i don't know. i'm sure i'll keep hemming and hawing over it for awhile. it's just whenever i get the nerve to grow out my hair, it starts looking so stupid that i end up cutting it off again. i'm thinking that having extensions that are not easy for me to remove would keep me from the urge to whack at my hair.

and about the biotin: i'm already taking 3000 mcg (3 mg) per day. can i take more, or is it useless, because my body won't absorb anymore?

The difference for me with a sew in is the weft laying horizontally across my scalp instead of many small, hard bonds. I personally did not care for that feeling on my head near the roots of my hair. For the money, I did not like GL, nor the over priced hair which did not match my texture, nor last. I have had much better results using other, less expensive attachment methods and hair that was a superior match to my own. That was my personal experience with GL that I was expressing as opinions were solicited.

You can't hide sew-ins from the fake hair check either. Some love GL, some hate it. It does appear that the issue comes from care and maintenance. Further processing to processed hair can cause damage. GL is processed hair. There's nothing wrong with temple hair so if you want to try it, go for it.

Hi there. We sound like we have very similar hair textures and types. I’m also fine but have been told I have a fair amount of hair.

I did wear GL for about 3 months and was not thrilled with them. Primarily in my case it was due to cost which would not be a problem for you. I also did not like the GL hair (Indian temple) and found that it was too rough and the texture did not match my own. It was also tangling and becoming worse and worse and that was in the first month of wear. I did not have excessive damage once they were removed, yet a little bit around my ears appeared to have broken off. I also really HATED the way GL felt in my hair. Imagine a bunch of rice up near your scalp. It’s like that. It’s not visually detectible but man; don’t plan on hiding it if someone touches your hair near the bonds.

I am now wearing a sew in with virgin hair that matches my texture completely and have never been happier.

I agree with MintMocha.  Great Lengths is a good product with decent hair, but the real determination if one gets damage or not is the expertise the the person applying them and also taking them out, and of course the care the client gives to them too.

Extensions should not be left in for longer than 12 weeks or else damage can occur.

I think the clip in hair is a great way to grow out your hair.  I've worn all sorts of extensions over the years, but I always go back to the clip ins because I find it least damaging on my fine, fragile hair.

It's best to have the natural hair be at least 4" long (and the longer the better) to get a natural blend with extensions.

Good luck to you!

I personally looooved Great Lengths.  I go back and forth between highlights and lowlights and took very good care of the hair (Terrax Crema, Biosilk before I flatiron, etc).  When the extensions came out it was a bit of a shock because I was used to a really thick pony tail and healthy looking strands with no spilt ends (think Faith Hills hair - circa 2000) but that is the reason I paid for INDIAN hair - it is stronger than my fine hair.  After a good trim I my hair looked nice and healthy again.  I'm not sure I would use any sort of fusion if you want to acheive healthy, long, natural hair because after having extensions I will never think my regular hair is that fab and my hair will never grow as that long (18"-22") without split ends.  In a nutshell, I loooved Great Lengths - I never had so many people literally stop me on the street and compliment my hair but if your goal is to have healthy, long, natural hair without extensions, I would just get some awesome clip ins (I personally would make my own with Bohyme wefts) and pop Biotin like it was goin out of style (your hair will grow like a weed - no joke) and wait it out.  My hair is fine when I get the GL taken out but anything hanging on to your strands for months every 1/2 cm or so will take its toll on your head.
Good luck! :)

Hi! I am a hairstylist who works in a salon that does Great Lengths. We do lots of extensions and the owner has been doing them for many years. I've been wanting to get them, but can't yet because my hair is too short. I've removed extensions on clients who take fantastic care of them, and their hair doesn't seem damaged at all, and clients who aren't gentle with them and their hair looks like crap. It also seems like the clients who also bleach their hair or get highlights along with the extensions have more damage.  We are all extremely gentle and careful when we do an extension removal too.

I'm wondering if anyone has had good luck with great lengths or fusion hair in general and doesn't think that it's damaging provided they are cared for properly. I keep waivering on it. I, myself, color my hair a 7RR with only 20 volume developer or deposit-only color. My hair is fine in texture, but I have a lot of hair.  It would be a bit before i could even do the extensions, lest I look like Britney Spears - and by the way, how long would I need to get it before doing the extensions? I just don't want to do it for an extended period of time if it's going to thin my hair out. I'd rather just endure the growing out of my hair if the extensions are going to ruin the integrity of my hair. I'd consider other methods, but i can get the great lengths done for so much cheaper than I could any other method (except glue-in) and I'm not sure that the other stylists could do any other methods, other than fusion. thanks for your advice and input!
