Hey Ryan - I don`t think your hair growth pattern has been infulenced by the chemicals. There are only two things that I know for sure that influence it. Hormone shifts and the time of year.
Things such as puberty, working out with weights, or a major stressor in your life can influence growth patterns. Also the time of year. From what I have read, we experience more all over rapid growth in the spring and summer. While in winter the hair slows down for the most aprt, except the top portion, which still continues to grow albeit, more slowly than in Spring. The reason the top grows faster than the rest is that when hair is long (as prehistoric man did wear it)..the top layer is the protective layer - it takes most of the beating from the suns rays and must replenish itself at a faster rate than the rest of the head.
If I might make a suggestion, trim the top part to match the sides as it grows out.

my hair didn`t use to come in like it does/ or has been now...but, once again...i don`t know if having shaved my head completely has played a role in that...what are your thoughts?

hi! thank you for responding to my post! i really appreciate it. well, i am -- to say the least relieved to know that a person of your experience would say that changing one`s hair growth pattern from a chemical is absurd.
but, i am still concerned. i have had my hair very short before...either a number one guard on the buzzers/clippers or no guard at all...
but, i had never shaved my head before...i don`t know if that is playing an impact on how my hair is growing...have you ever come across a situation like that?
I have done hair for 19 years and I have never heard anything about a chemical changing ones growth pattern. But, I will do a little research and get back to you.
In the mean time, I`m going to give you my feeling on the whole matter. (even though I haven`t read the posts telling of your chemical experience).
First a question: Is this the first time you`ve shaved your head?? Have you ever grown it out from scratch before? Was there any skin irritation or chemical burns?? If not...
I`m guessing that the curl pattern in your hair is pretty strong. And in those first stages of growth your curl moves strongly in the directions that you described. If you can just hang in there until your hair gets a little longer, and the curl comes around on itself it will literally turn the other way and form those nice thick curls you`ve always loved. (not...I`m guessing, again).
I hope you get more input...in the meantime, I`ll ask around.
There are some really wonderful strong styling products that could help push that hair around while growing out.
i posted almost the same message in the curly hair forum...
i`m sure anyone who has read my postings is well aware of the fact that i have naturally curly hair that was ruined from chemical straightener...
ever since then, despite of having shaved my head twice -- it seems to be growing in funny....
this includes a mini-mohawk...my hair forms a ridge in the middle of my head...where the hair is taller in the middle of my head than on the opposing sides...that is, left or right side of the top of my head.
i recently saw a stylist and she said that i may have changed my hair`s growth pattern with the chemical straightener -- and it may come in funny now because of that...
is it actually possible to change your hair`s growth pattern from something like that?
