Hi Shilo;

Hard water, can build up in hair and on scalp...weight it down, discolor it, and yes even cause odor. Yes, the Lemon juice (or vinegar) are another way of clarifying the hair and scalp, plus they help with odor sometimes. And Oh yeah of course you rinse that out well also...HOT water. No Lemon Juice will not damage your hair, your hair should feel smoother and shinier after. Hard water and moisture jamed into your or onto your hair will damage though.

My training on the moisture thing is that, IMO, fine hair can easily be over moisturized. Moisture softens and swells the hairs cuticle layer, in short it dries that way, then looks dry or frizzy after its dry.
It appears dry but actually that cuticle is open. A good way to know if your hair is over moisturized is the towel test; when your hair is dripping wet gently squeeze the water out,(never rub dry or rough hair up with towel. wet hair is weak hair.)
if in a few seconds the hair is drippy again you are likely over mushed.

Try Redken Cat Protein, fine hair lacks protein. Protien strengthens by smoothing and rehardening. You should notice a difference in one application.
In my opinion Stylists way over prescribe moisture.:)

First of all, thank you for responding :)
I DO have hard water and I hate it! How exactly does it affect hair? I think I have had the problem for awhile and just ignored it. I am not on medications, and I do use a clarifying shampoo about once a week (but maybe I am not massaging deeply enough). Lemon wouldn`t damage fine dry hair? Is it further means of clarifying? I use bumble and bumble, Tigi, and Sebastian styling products (not all at once...except for a light spritz of hairspray at the end). I could try not using moisturizing products, but my hair is dry and I don`t think I could permanently go without the products for dry hair. I have very bizarre hair...it gets tired of all products quickly (shampoo, conditioner, stylers)...I have to switch around a lot. When I do switch, I seriously notice a big difference (not is the smell, but in the way my hair acts).
I don`t think I have Bromidrosis as I do not have strange odors in other places. I cannot smell my scalp by just sniffing into the air, but if I rub my fingers on my scalp I feel that they acquire a strange odor. And as with the woman you quoted, my husband notices the smell too. It`s not the worst thing in the world, but it is annoying and I wish I knew what to do about it. Thanks for your help!

Hi Shilo;
I have had my nose above thousands of heads in my time and the only time I have ever noticed odor (in the circumstances you described) is when the daily products were building up or not getting completely removed every day.

Is this a recent development or have you experienced this for a long time?? Are you on any medication? Is your water hard?? (iron? lime? how do shampoos lather on you?) What styling products are you currently using?

The first and easiest thing I`m going to recommend is 1.) Shampoo with a Clarifying shampoo, use the PADS (not finger nails) and massage your scalp deeply...til its pink...get that surface circulation going. Rinse thoroughly get all of the shampoo out.

2.) Then soak with vinegar or fresh lemon juice for five minutes (I prefer fresh squeezed lemon juice), its drippy and messy and for "shilos" sake keep it out of your eyes.:)

Quit with the moisturizing products...no shampoos for...dry hair, hydrating...balsum..some thickening poo`s...for now. Try it let`s see if there is an improvement.? Let me know.

Check this site out:)

I found this on the Tricoligist`s site; I`m not sure but...I don`t think that you have bromidrosis or you would notice the odor in places other than your scalp???:)

I have a problem. My husband says my scalp has a bad odor. I asked my doctor about it and he recommended an over the counter shampoo, I have since tried everyone that is sold. I wash my hair daily and have switched shampoos and conditioners, and nothing helps. Can it be something internal? My scalp does sometimes itch, but I don`t have dandruff. Any ideas what it could be?

I regret that I am prohibited by The Society`s ethical code from offering anything except the most general advice, or attempting any form of diagnosis. The following is therefore based on that:
Bromidrosis is a condition in which the sweat develops an extremely disagreeable odor, this can be due to bacterial infection which causes decomposition of sweat. In some cases it may be due to excessive secretion of the apocrine glands. It is unusual - but not impossible for the scalp to be affected. Some relief has been gained by drinking massive quantities of water daily (restrict/cut out/ tea, coffee and especially alcohol). Any improvement may take several weeks. Where this simple procedure fails seek the advice of a dermatologist.

I don`t think I have ever read about this problem...am I the only one who suffers from it? I do not have any physical problems with my scalp such as itching, dandruff, excessively oily, etc. BUT my scalp always has an unpleasant odor to it. It does not matter how much I shampoo or what kind of beautiful smelling products I use. I don`t really know how to explain the odor...it`s sort of a dirty (maybe like gym socks) sort of smell. I have fine thin hair, shampoo almost every day, use styling products (but not excessively), and do not eat strong foods or spices. Has anyone ever heard of this or experienced it? PLEASE HELP...it really makes me feel unpleasant. Thanks!
