Hi Shanna,
My hair reaches to my knees, and I started with 2-inch layered hair; so, yes, you can grow your hair long.
What follows is strictly my opinion... take it or leave it...
Since your hair has been growing out for nearly a year now, I think getting a tiny trim is an excellent idea. The key is finding a stylist who will trim just a tiny amount. Do you have or know a stylist you can trust to do just that?
I did just about the same thing, going nearly a year without a haircut, but by that time it was a layered mess. I found a salon that specialized in long hair and gradually over the course of three years, had the layers gradually grown out (and by that time it was to my lower back). Basically, the stylist trimmed a bit off the bottom layers, and usually left the top layers untrimmed (or trimmed a teensy amount every other visit).
It took awhile but after every trim my hair looked better, and since so little was being trimmed, my hair grew longer about as fast as was possible (about 5 inches per year).
Hope this helps. And keep coming back here for support as your hair grows long.
I need support. I am trying to grow long hair for the first time in my life. It is currently in a stupid bob with some shaggy layers hanging out from underneath. It is just long enough to put in a short ponytail.
Lately it is really bugging me. It is really thick and half straight(on top and in front) and half wavy/squirrelly(underneath and in the back). Go figure. Anyway, I had cut it off in Feb of 02-short and then trimmed it again to that short in June of 02. I have not cut it since. I am really in the mood to cut it but feel like I have come so far.
I guess my question is, should I trust someone to trim it? Should I allow layers? And is there anything I can do to make it grow faster? Shampoo? Conditioner? And what about styles for this stage? I mean, what have any of you done with barrettes, elastics, etc at this stage-
