This is interesting Sophie: we can send a man to the moon, photograph distant galaxies and make genetically altered rabbits glow in the dark and yet mankind cannot say for sure if hair is dead :-)

Hey you Guys I got this info from the Trichological Society...Hair and Scalp Sicence, site.

The hair shaft is currently believed to be a dead structure composed of cells which die after leaving the dermal papilla. As all follicles are established before birth no new ones are created there after. All characteristics are genetically determined. The hairshaft - a keratinised structure composed of an outer cuticle (tile-like protective layer of keratinised cells) the cortex where cells are held firmly together, and an inner medulla where the cells are larger more loosely connected and partially separated by air spaces. The hair is approximately cylindrical.

Anyway they say "The hair shaft is Currently believed to be dead."

I thought the word Currently was interesting.

Hi Lili and Lyris:

I too have had the honor of styling Or I should say restyling 2 of my GOOD clients....one of them a very close friend of mine. ( I was just plain madd at her for leaving me so early....thats a little selfish I know) In both cases the hair had already been set...I simply had too rearrange the hair to give it a more modern look. So that it looked more like them.

I currently have some clients that do threatened me regularly with hauntings....and one even says that she has it spelled out on the first line of her will, that I am to make sure her hair is presentable at... her funeral ....Or a hit will be put out on my life....LOL...I think shes serious...Hehehe.

This is a very interesting query. All of us hairstylist have had clients whose hair changes drastically after surgery or sickness...some heart meds really seem too play havoc with hair...Texture and condition....I know that the health of a person can directly determine the body and shine and even color of hair.

I know of a person who lost most of the color in their hair overnight....There is a disorder that causes this... can't name it right now.

Anyway very interesting??? Good luck with the BTC site I think their server is down again or something...can't post right now..

Lets do some more research..

Cheers, You Guys.

Hi Lyris,

I went to her house 3 weeks before she died and cut and styled her hair for her. Her home was a normal home, no excess moisture etc. She died at home also. The funeral directors showed me what they use and its that really cheap generic shampoo from sally's, ya know the fruit scented stuff that comes in gallons.

My thoughts are it has to be on the cellular level. There are no nerve endings in the hair so it would not hurt to cut. Nexxus education class teach that hair is actually a filter, that is why there are drug screenings by hair strands. A drug like majauana will show up in the hair only 48 hours after use.

I am going to post another thread on Behind the Chair .com and see what comes up. I will keep you informed. This really peeked my curiousity.

Oh, she asked me over and over for the last 2 years, "Now, you are going to do my hair for me at the funeral home, aren't you?" I promised her so I had to comply. I found it to be an honor that she trusted me with such intimate final request. She died after a 2 year long battle with cancer.

Oh my gosh......I'm so sorry you have to do that occasionally....what an experience. I know I couldn't do it. Well, hair is definitely dead from the moment it emerges from our scalps; othewise it would hurt like heck when we cut it. My best guess with regards to she who has recently passed on would be a.) whatever the preparers used on her hair was interfering with your styling attempts b.) oil production obviously stops when life is through, so that might have an impact, or c.) the environment in which this person was kept prior to your visit for styling was too damp or dry--I blame a whole barrage of styling problems on atmospheric phenomena (it's much better than admitting I have really problematic hair!)

But wow, what a macabre topic. That must be difficult for you--I'm glad you are able to remain professional and do your job!

Hey gang,

I had the unfortunate expirence of styling a clients hair who had pasted away at the funeral home on Saturday. This was the second time I have done this. As some of you may already know a "dead persons" hair is VERY hard to style. I put a perm in this clients hair 3 months ago, and no matter what I used I could not curl her hair. I sprayed Hot Sets and Freeze and Shine, used my hot tools curling iron on 10 and it took 5 tries and it finally curled. I have had this client for 5 years and her hair was never hard to curl. Other hairstylist I talk to say that they all are like this. I asked The embalmers what they use to shampoo their hair and it was that cheap fruit scented gallon shampoo.

My question is........and its just a thought that came to me.......If "corpse" hair is so hard to curl but you curled it just fine 3 weeks ago.......then if science tells us that the hair on our head is "dead" .........is hair REALLY dead on our living breathing bodies.

HMMMMMM...... very deep thought huh?

Any thoughts from the peanut gallery???
