Hi Stinka,

Think about this..... when naturallywavy hair is exposed to humidity,, what does it do??

I returns to its naturel state.......which is wavy. The same goes for straight hair. If someone with straight hair and they curl it everyday gets exposed toa rainy day, the curl falls and it returns to its naturel state.

Therefore,

Yes, the steam is making your hair swell.

The ceramic iron is a very good idea. The ceramics hold heat evenly throughout the metal iron. They really work well.

Another thing to consider, which you may already so this, is some kind of flat iron spray. Irons can be really harsh on the hair. A flat iron spray can protect the hair from the heat and help keep in straight while smoothing it at the same time.

Great ones to try are Sexy Straight hair Flat Iron Spray (my Fav) , Paul Mitchells Heat Seal, Or Redken's Spray Starch or Traction.

I hope this helps

I straighten my hair about once a week after letting it air dry (normally wavy), and I've noticed that lately it has been starting to smell a lot like vasaline.

I use the Conair Steam Straightener, but I am investing in buying a GOOD ceramic flat iron from the salon.

My question is...can steam straighteners make your hair smell?

The thing is, my hair isn't turning out all that damaged or anything, but I know that I have been using the straightener on and off for over a year now, so maybe that's the effect.

I'm wondering if it's starting to smell because of the shampoo I use, or some kind of hair product, but I'm kind of speculating on that now.

I also cleaned out the straightener and everything (except the inside part where I can't reach -- where the wet, spongey thing goes).

Damn heat and such.

Any ideas on what's wrong with my hair, and on how to fix it?

Thanks!
