You might want to get the splits trimmed off first, they just climb the hair...I'm a little hesitant to tell you anything because so much has been done already, and if its split, you really don't want to hit the breaking point.  If it were me, I'd try colorfix, but there's a chance that won't remove the dye that was permanent....it may still help because your hair was blonde before that, so it was really porous, so a lot of the permanent may have just slid out already, its really hard to say.  If you get colorfix, you'd have to definitely do test strands to make sure something was going to happen to make it worth the damage (colorfix is low peroxide, so its not that damaging, but it still is a little, and you may have to use it a lot of times since your hair is so dark).  You'll probably wind up with orange or yellow hair, if it does anything, then you'd have to dye over it.

I'll be honest with you, red dye has the smallest molecules, and they just slide right out of the hair leaving it dull really fast, and on hair that is already porous from chemicals that's going to happen extremely fast.  Really the best way to go red is with henna (NOT drug store henna which has metals in it and comes out dull looking, but body art quality henna  you can buy online, which is natural and you can redo it anytime you want to refresh the color without getting damage....its permanant though, so no changing your mind after that, only a haircut will remove it...its also risky on dyed hair, you may or may not get the result you want, I'd suggest researching what others have done on dyed hair on mehandi if you want to go that route.  If you want a light bright red, you'll have to remove all your dark dye for sure before the henna would show up.

I've seen some european women (my mother in law for one), who get red/violet dyed hair and it doesn't fade...but I have yet to encounter this great dye in the US, (I don't know what she uses, its all in french).

Hi everyone :)  I've been googling all morning trying to find out why my hair just quite simply will not get to the correct color when I found this place.  Let me give you some background...

I was born a light blond, then my genetics decided after 20 that I should go darker and darker.  At 22 I decided to start dying it blonde and continued to dye it blonde until 30 when my colorist moved away.  In all of those 8 years there was not any type of deviation from the same formula, so it got overly blonde and I really started to hate it.  It was an all-over color.  The very first time she dyed it I turned not blonde, but a VERY strawberry "blonde".  She had me come in a second time to add even more ash to get me to blonde.

Last December (at 30) I decided that I wanted to go red (think Redken bonfire).  I went to the same salon, and saw someone else.  She made me a little nervous because she kept referring back to a more senior colorist that I'd seen there for years.  I probably should have just gone to him.  She put in an all-over color, though I'm not sure what brand... I was happy with it, very very very happy with it.  The roots where my hair had grown out was significantly brighter than the rest of my hair and I loved the roots portion the most.  It was a very nice shade of red, a bit darker (tending to a level 5 rather than the 6 I wanted) than I was expecting but I liked it.  Then.... a week later my hair looked horrible.  The color was duller than dull and it just looked brown.  I had never seen myself with brown hair before, and I really don't like it.  I decided to go back and she suggested a semi-permanent to go on top.  So, we did the semi-permanent and this time it was red again but it was also even darker (To a  level 4 rather than the 6 I wanted) and with more violet.  I don't want darker.  We opted to put about an inch or so of black at the bottom of my hair.  Fast forward a week or two and my hair is once again all over brown and just horrible looking.  Very very dull.  I left it alone for a few months and have never been back to see her.

I decided that I could probably do a better job at home.  I bought a box of Loreal that looked close to Bonfire and ta-da... it looked the same as what she did the second time (still a level 4 and not the 6 I wanted).  This lasted for about 6 weeks.  It was a permanent.

My wedding was coming up so I decided to have my hair colored the night before the wedding (yes, I know... but I'm not afraid of having purple hair) because I hated the brown so very much.  I went to a Redken salon and they used the EQ series and I believe it was Bonfire though I didn't look at anything but color swatches, and she added in an EQ red kicker and she also put the black ends back in (about an inch from the bottom).  I was pleased, it was no longer brown... but it also wasn't that vibrant red that I had in the very beginning and lost so quickly.

It's been a year almost to the day since I ditched the blonde.  My hair currently has way too much violet in it, I assume that's from the original person trying to color correct the way too bright blonde.  How do I get the red that I want without going even darker, without getting even more violet, and without completely destroying my hair?  I have split-ends galore.  My hair has the texture and thickness of a blonde and it's wavy.  I'm about to turn 32 and I have a few greys in the front that I never knew I had until my hair started to grow out.  The black is still on the ends, and I'm happy with that.  I realize that black is practically impossible to work with which is why I kept it to the bottoms... but at this point if I can't get the red that I want I'm going to end up dying my hair all-over black just to get rid of this horrible dull brown.  Please help me :(  What should I use?  How can I correct this at home?  The salons just aren't working for me.  When I was a teen-ager I worked in a salon in the back room mixing colors, etc. so I get the basics.  I was looking at Wella products as a possibility but I don't want to make things worse.
Put the color down, and walk away slowly.
