Well salycylic acid has been proven to combat dandruff. I read it somewhere that it helps to get rid the dead cells before they shed onto your shoulder. BTW when i read the ingredients on my facial clenser that contained AHA it contains salycylic acid. Salycylic asid is not that drying because they use such a small amount in shampoo. Clairol Herbal Essences for dandruff used it. I used to have dandruff, like a lot. I mean i did not get flakes, i got small patches of dead skin that people could notice on back of my head. And people DO NOTICE, but now since i have been taking spirulina as a supplement the dandruff has gone :) no more Pert Plus for me :) I also read if you want to combat dandruff better you could use two different kinds of dandruff shampoo. One that contains salycylic acid to cut through the crust and ZPT kill the fungus that cause dandruff
LOL! Lili, I'm just picturing you going to the drugstore, unscrewing the cap off a bottle of Denorex (the extra-strength!) and slipping a test swab in there. All Secret Squirrel like!
That should raise some eyebrows!
Don't worry about it, I'll just get some from my mom next time I see her.
Thanks for the offer though!

I have some ph test strips in the salon that I ordered from a labratory supply online. They are very accurate. If I get the oppritunity, I will test it for you.

That is really good information, maybe I will try that shampoo. I could always return the Denorex.
I would like to test the pH of the Denorex though. It works so well. I hope it isn't too alkaline, that thought had occured to me. But I told myself that the active ingredient is salicylic ACID after all, so it must be acidic, right? I know, I know, it ain't necessarily so. Too bad I'm no longer in HS Chemistry class = easy access to pH test strips. I think my mom has some for her aquarium.
I had read somewhere that dandruff is like a yeast infection in your hair follicles. Which makes some sense... they went on to say that dandruff should go away after a week or so of using dandruff shampoo. Maybe they meant psoriasis or something else.
It doesn't really matter to me, I just don't want my scalp to be itchy and flaky!

Redken Solve shampoo has an active ingrediant of Zinc Pyrithuim. It also has Sodium Laurth Sulfate and has a ph of 5. Many dandruff shampoos have a higher ph to strip your hair of oils. Dandruff is a inhereted condition of an over-production of dead skin cells. It is not a bacteria, psriasis, or excema. Everyone sheds dead skins all the time, some just shed them faster, there fore making them clump together (flakes). Zinc Pyrithuim helps to slow down the production.
This shampoo is also safe for chemically treated hair and it won't strip color.
I was quite impressed by my findings, I hope it helps.

So I was in a hurry and just bought more Denorex, because I saw that active ingredient was Salicylic Acid, not Coal Tar.
Which is odd, I thought it used to be Coal Tar. Maybe they changed it. Anyway, it works! Sorry, I don't wear silver rings anymore, so I can't tell you if it still strips tarnish. :p
I just thought that was weird, the Salicylic Acid. That's what I put on my face for acne! And I always used to worry about my hair touching my face when Salicylic Acid was on it. Hmmm.

Oh, thanks! I wasn't aware Redken made a dandruff shampoo.
I haven't tried Paul Mitchell's Tea Tree. I thought Tea Tree Oil was supposed to dry hair out? I had some Kiehl's shampoo once with Tea Tree Oil in it, and it turned my hair into straw.

I will check on the bottle of Redken's anti-dandruff and let you know what it says.
Have you tried Paul Mitchells Tea Tree? And if so how did you like it?

OK, I just emptied my bottle of Neutrogena T-Gel. And before I buy more, I was wondering if you had any suggestions for a good dandruff shampoo that does not contain Coal Tar?
I only need a dandruff shampoo once or twice a week. I used to use Denorex for years, when I was younger. Denorex works great for clearing dandruff! But it also has Coal Tar, which is thought to be cancer causing (though it hasn't been proven).
I also think Denorex must be too harsh for hair health. I remember washing my hair with my silver rings on, and Denorex took all the tarnish off my rings! Probably not something I want in my hair, now that I am older and wiser.
SO... Does anyone know of a good, effective yet gentle dandruff shampoo? Without Coal Tar? Maybe there's something natural I could try?
BTW, I have tried Head and Shoulders. Doesn't work for me.
Thank you!
