hey karen,
thanks again for your help. i think i am gonna check out either the local college cosmetology class or a local salon to see if i can be a model for them. either that or just wait it out until i can afford to have it done again.
ill just have to keep pulling out the greys for now

thanks karen, if you could answer a couple more questions?
the rep also gave me an additive to reduce red. if i use the golden brown color should i use the additive as well?
does demi initially turn the hair darker than a permanant color would?
thanks again
Without knowing exactly what you were given to counteract the red in your hair I really can not comment on that one.
I will say the warm/gold brown is needed to cancel out any green hue.
If your hair is porous it is likely that the dark brown will grab onto your hair and will initially look darker, but will fade after quite a few washes, however you can opt for a lighter gold brown or a dark golden blonde. I would really need to see a pic of how dark/light your hair is.

I would say find a salon that need a model for a class. Most salon like ours offer these classes on Monday's ( our day off) or you can go to your local beauty school and pay a nominal fee to have it done. Depending on what you do for a living you might offer to barter a service.
Hope that Helps, Zahava

thank you for your response. i wasnt looking to cover up the highlights, i actually like them. i initially had them put in because i had a home color that turned out black. it didnt look that good on me and recoloring didnt lighten it up but remained black.
i wanted to color my hair to cover the grey. i was laid off from my job and can afford to hit the salon. i was hoping the higlighted part would still be lighter than the darker part.
upon research i saw that ash color could turn the bleached out parts green. i also planned on rehighlighting if i didnt like how the color turned out.
i must admit after the last time when it turned black i am a little scared even tho i have colored my own hair for over 10 years. so, what do you think? should i do an all ove color with golden brown? should i add that red diminisher the rep gave me?
or just continue to pull the greys out until i can afford to hit the salon?
also, what are your thoughts on going to a cosmetology class at the local college?

Covering up highlights is a BIG deal! I get that you want to color your own hair but what you getting ready to do is called a color correction. First you need to fill those blonde highlights with a very warm light brown( demi), then you can use the color you are wanting to achieve. I will tell you a little secret....most salons have assistants or new stylist who need models for classes....Get it were you want it then you can take over WITH the guidance of a pro! I own a salon I know!

First of all use a golden brown, as you are right blonde and ash brown can pull a green hue. Again yes to your hi lights still being lighter than your block colour. you will probs end up with caramel hi lights. Maybe stick with a demi permanent rather than permanent, if you don't like the end result, its easier to lift back out.

hello, i need some hair coloring advice. my hair is dark brown ( naturally and colored) with highlights. the last 3 colorings have been done in a salon and thats when the highlights were put in. i want to color at home this time. have done my own hair many many times.
my question is should i use ash brown or golden brown? i bought ash to diminish red tones but i have done some research and heard about the bleached highlighted parts turning green with ash.?
also, the rep at sallys told me the highlighted parts would still be lighter, which is what i would like as opposed to just one solid color. if i dont like how it turns out, can i then highlight it without messing it up?
this is an awesome forum with lots of knowledge and tips and i sure appreciate any help ya'll can give me.
