I second what Hermione says. Perms are bad
for the hair (scalp as well as the hair itself).
I wish they were never invented. Don't risk
getting fried hair.

Perms seem to go "in" and "out" with whatever the current style is. The problem with that, if you like to keep very current, is that perm is short for "permanent wave." As in -permanent-. If you don't want the curls anymore after a few months, you'll have to get your hair chemically straightened, or spend lots of time styling it straight. Perms are very damaging to your hair, so you need to take special care after getting one. I think you have to have a strong commitment to having perm curls and taking care of them.

Just my humble opinion, but if you're just looking for something different and fun, experiment with some of the soft rollers or windy things that give you curls until your next shampoo. No chemical damage that way, and if you end up not liking it, just go wash your head.

I've been getting my hair permed since I was in 5th grade. My hair wasn't straight, but it wasn't curly. It was very uneven and hard to deal with, and I always wanted curls. I spend a good bit of $ on quality shampoos, conditioners, and styling products to take care of it. My hair is about BSL now, and I'm trying to grow it to around waist length, so I need to be even more careful with how I take care of it, because the longer it gets, the more damage and abuse the older hair has taken.

My hair is naturally straight...tho most of my life I've permed...straightened out the last one a bit over a year ago and don't intend to ever perm again...is too hard on the hair. You know how it goes...about 6 months into it, it begins to relax halfway down your head, so you get yet another...it's to me a cycle..one that I've finally been able to break. I do color to cover those vile first greys, but my hair is in the best health it's been in since childhood *lol*

Tho is entirely ones own personal preference

Are Perms "in" or are they "out"? I am thinking about getting one just for something fun and different, but I don't want to be outdated. Any thoughts or ideas on perms?
