If you do get it bleached by a pro they will probably do the scalp seperate as it is (warm) and the hair color already on your hair will be lifted & be different. Gentle oil bleaches are usually recommended for the scalp & 20 Vol. or less... You can get a consultation (sometimes free) to see what is recommended or what they would do in your case depending on your hair condition.
If you do a test strand, time it.
If your goal is platinum, Your hair will need to be in good condition to be bleached to pale yellow. Only if it is pale yellow will a DEMI or Toner will be applied to counteract the yellow (Violet) is used... sometimes blue violet etc. Although, if loads of color buildup exists and you get YELLOW then toners exist for that too. That is why one waits to see what it is lightened to first. You can test the strand after with a toner & watch it turn platinum. Many people get aggrevated or can't wait to have the perfect hair & try to put on a toner when the hair is not lightened properly. Patience or a Pro is KEY! Goodluck!! Patience for learning and applying, trying to get the proper pale yellow and porosity while keeping the hair in good condition to accept the toner.
Shampoo is also used to keep the yellow away. I like Schwarzkopf Color Save Silver but there are many out there!

I think you're right in saying that you have to bleach it. I'd be a bit scared of doing it myself, though... my friend who works at Sally Beauty told me about a woman who came in the other day with bright orange hair because she tried to do it herself. I was considering bleaching my own hair and I thought better of it. Good luck whatever you decide to do!

I've been coloring my hair for years, mostly just box colors that are medium brown-almost black. I've gone in a few times and had my hair done, with caramel-y colored blonde and reddish-brown all over. Last time I went in to get my hair done was in April of this year, I had the same thing done, blonde hi-lights with brown lo-lights, the brown this time was really close to my natural color, but a bit more red. At any rate, I let it grow out until a couple weeks ago, so I had about 4 inches of roots. I had a blonde box color that had been sitting around, so I decided just to use it. My hair turned out pretty good, but a bit brassy at my roots, and still a lot of brown in it. That was about 2 weeks ago. I decided to use a toner and developer in it (I used clairol white beige with pure white 20vl developer) yesterday. It did tone down the brassiness, but it's still too dark and a little goldish colored.
What I really want is platinum blonde hair all-over. I don't know if I should get the current color stripped out before doing anything, or if I should bleach and use toners as it is now? I'm also a little scared to use bleach in my hair, but I know that's about the only thing that will get my hair light enough. My hair is naturally a light brown. I've also looked at using liquid lighteners.
My hair is in really good shape, no stretching or breaking. My dyed color right now is something I can live with, but it's not really the look I'm going for!
