Your hair was initially getting lighter and lighter because when they do highlights, as far as I'm aware, they don't usually do just the roots, they just highlight more and more hair each time.

If your ponytail is thinner, you probably either have breakage from the chemicals, or fallout. Fallout is common the more dye you add, so people don't usually worry about it, you should not look like you are losing hair or anything to anyone else, its just that you can tell how much comes out in your brush or your shower. Unfortunately, flat ironing it is only going to add to the damage. Heat is bad, but on hair damaged by lightening chemicals, it can be a lot worse.

I'm not sure why it would lay flatter and lack volume, usually hair that has been damaged by chemicals is easier to style (I'm saying that only based on my own hair, which holds curl only if it has been dyed and damaged a bit, otherwise it falls straight). It could be that the semi, being deposit only, is actually weighing the hair down, but I don't have experience with this so I can't say (also not a pro).

It could be that you're getting build up from the heavy conditioner and the leave-in. Silicones can build up. If you use a clarifying shampoo that will remove residue, and may also lighten your dye by removing it. It will dry your hair out a lot though, so you will want to recondition with the heavy stuff after clarifying. You may just find you need to clarify once every few weeks to give you back your volume.

I have mid-back length baby fine hair that I have been highlighting for the last 8 months or so.  During those months I rarely used a hair dryer except to smooth my bangs and would use a wave/curl enhancer to get beachy, ropey waves.  My hair was feeling and looking the healthiest it had in a long time.   Two weeks ago I decided to have my colorist add lowlights to give it more depth/dimension for fall, as it seemed to be getting lighter and lighter especially around my face and on the ends.  Before she added these lowlights (using a Colorance demi perm product) I had a ton of volume and very little breakage.  Now my hair seems very flat and will NOT respond to the wave/curl enhancing products I used before.  When I apply the product, scrunch and air dry like before...it just hangs there straight and I have a lot of frizziness and breakage.  Now I have to blow it dry AND use a flat iron to smooth it down.  It looks healthy and shiny after doing that, but I clearly have way less volume.  My pony tail also is much thinner now too.  My question is...would a demi perm color cause these problems combined with the previous highlighting?  Or was my hair just full from the highlights when I was only doing that and not color?  I'd rather not have to blow dry and flat iron my hair daily, but I don't know how else to style it at this point.  Also, I was not happy with how dark the color turned out so I've been using a volumizing shampoo hoping it would lighten the color some.  I am using Deeeep...a protein conditioner from Bumble and bumble once a week, and use the leave in conditioner also by Bumble & bumble daily to combat dryness.  Also, will this demi perm color eventually fade on its own without using a volumizer or clarifying shampoo?  Any advice appreciated!  Unhappy

I will try and post before and after pics later to give you an idea of how dramatic the difference is.

Ok...first pic with full wavy hair and highlights...the second pic flat with low lights.
