Questions on hair dying?

I want to dye my hair but I'm scared! (how stupid does that sound lol) I've seen people at school and I HATE IT when your roots and the rest of your hair is a different color. I know that probably the only way of preventing that is to not dye your hair at all or maintain it very well or dye it a similar color. And if you couldn't already tell...I'm a virgin to hair coloring!!! lol. Now here come the questions:
How long do you have to wait before going in for touch ups?

Is there any possible way to dye your hair w/out the roots showing but you can still tell your hair is a different color?

I'm swimming right now and my hair is kind of damaged from the chlorine. Should I wait until after I'm done swimming and my hair gets better to dye it?

Before I was swimming my hair was very fine and soft...will adding color give it more volume and thickness? And will my hair be ok b/c it is so fine if i decide to dye it?

Is maintaning your hair color (w/o the roots showing) hard?

What colors would look good in my hair?
