Can a very hot blow dry cause hair loss?

A month and a half ago a stylist blow dried my hair straight using a very hot setting and often very close to my scalp to give my thin, fine hair lift. I recently had some hair loss and it may or may not be due to this episode, I keep wondering.

Does Karen or anyone know whether such a thing could actually have "killed" the hair follicles, causing hair loss? If so, would this type of damage mean the hair won`t come back? Please help!!
