The grow-out sucks. I know. I went through it. Hang in there. Caramia has some good suggestions. Another idea (for what it's worth)... one woman I know who grew it out slicked her hair back every day until it was long enough to pull into a ponytail.
It's absolutely essential to find a stylist who will assist you in the process, who will trim the absolute minimum from the layers. I was fortunate to find one. The entire salon specialized in long hair, so I was in good hands when I entered the place.
I wish you well. Let us know how you progress.

I've been growing my hair out from a pixie so I am currently experiencing the same thing you are - the awkward stage. Try using barrettes and headbands to keep your hair looking neat and to keep the layers out of your eyes and off your face as they grow out. It won't be long and you'll be able to put your hair into a ponytail or bun and then you'll really be on your way to long locks as it grows out. Good luck!
I have short hair(a bob) and I'm trying to grow it out. The only problem is that it was layered and I had bangs. Now I can't find a way to style my hair to make me look decent. Can anyone give help to a girl in need?
