hey!!! im 16/f/canada..... oh my goodness!!! you are right that you need a new hairstyle (well, i don`t really know, but....)
anyway, like you mentioned, the flipping of the bangs is getting really old!!!!! this is only my opinion, but this shaggy/messy look is so y on most guys..... the shaggy thing only works for guys with wavy or curly hair (please don`t try if you have straight hair)... just when you first grow it out, it looks really dumb and most of my guyfriends wanted to cut it, but one of my friends endured this phase and he got past the weird look where it`s all big and fuzzy and stuff, and now it`s like past his ears and it is sooooo incredible!!!!
but if you dont` have curly/wavy hair then i`d suggest you try the messy look.... grow it about 2-3 inches and then wet it a bit and run gel/moose through it and just make it messy (no parts/spikes, etc) just messy and if you can get the messy art down, that looks really sweet too
as for the spikes.... if you can do it and it looks okay, then do it (if that`s the look you like)
but for any guy, these days, i`d say the average likes the shaggy/messy look.....
but then again, it`s just my opinion!!!

Right now some of the hottest looks are a short messy Caeser and a variety of fades. The fades start very short at the neckline and then "fade" up towards the crown with hair being worn at various lengths around the crown area. Messy is very hot right now too. So a fade with a little longer crown that is waxed or has some hair paste is very trendy.

Hope that helps.

Best wishes,
Karen
