Hi, I'm African-American too with a two young pre-school kids, a girl and a boy.
I'm sure it would save me some money to cut the kids hair myself, but I have to admit, I spend a little money and take them to the same salon where I get my hair trimmed, and have one of the gals there cut their hair.
Wish I could help ya.
Maybe just buy some clippers, there might be some instructions with the purchase. Or call a local barber for some instructions. Maybe a nice barber would be willing to help you. Good luck!

Glad to be a part of the board!!! I am stuck in a dilema. My 2 year old son hates going to the barber shop to get a hair cut. However, I think he would let me do it, if only I knew how. Watching the barbers do it at the shop, doesn't seem all that difficult, but I know there has to be an art to it.
Can anyone who knows explain to me, how a hair cut should be done on African-American male hair, like which direction one should cut, going with the grain or against the grain, lining-up, etc.
I really appreciate any help anyone can give as I am very desperate. The battles at the Barbershop are beginning to be too much for me to handle!!!!
