Welcome to the board, mcjenks!

wittils has given excellent advice. The hardest part is having the patience. So hang in there, you can do it.

No, just let it go and be wild for a time, it's too short to trim and do anything with it. If you be trimming it all the time, it will take longer to grow out and you just might give up. Besides it is probably very healthy with no dry or split ends yet, which is the only reason to trim the ends off... unless you need to style it.

I have two sons who grew out their hair from nothing. Granted both have very curly hair. One just went for it. His hair is very thick! He wore a cap, had a small section shaved at the nape of his neck so his hair looked short because the bulk of it was tucked inside the cap. His hair is very long now and eventually he let the all of it grow.

The other son also has wavy/curly hair, and he was more impatient about it. It seemed to take forever... and he hated it when it was in the way, in his eyes. But he did not want to wear a hat or bandana, so he endured the months. A year later it's below his shoulders. Now we look back at last summer's pictures and wow it has grown!

Neither one trimmed their hair, they just let it grow and used a lot of good products to keep it healthy. And neither one cared about "style" but they kept it neat.

It's difficult... to have patience when growing hair out... but I would say just to let it grow. With thick curly hair the layers that naturally come from growing it out from shaved to a longer length actually help in the appearance. I can't say the same is true for straight hair, especially if it is thin. And I would have no idea how I would handle that situation.

Hope this offers up a little encouragement.
Precious is the day... it happens only once in a lifetime.

My whole life I've had a shaved head, so having hair is totally new for me. I haven't cut my hair since november, and it's around 3 inches long right now. It's so THICK, and looks like crap.

Is there a good way to style hair at this length? Should I be getting part of it trimmed? My goal is to have my hair pulled back to a ponytail.
