Hi Alibran,

Thank you for your nice compliment on our message board and the photos that have been shared by a number of members.

For detangling purposes, I only use a wide-tooth comb. And I follow that up with a paddle brush to really be thorough. Only at that point (once your hair is completely free of tangles) would I use a boar bristle brush. They are good for distributing the oil (wax) from your scalp and the hair near the roots to the rest of the hair shafts. I recommend using a BBB that has plenty of spaces between the tufts, especially since your hair is thick. Mason Pearson has an excellent reputation, as do several other makers, including Kent.

Hi, I'm new here, and have just decided to grow my hair long. I've been "letting it grow" from a really short cut for the last 2 years, with really no idea what I wanted to do with it. Then I had it put in braids with extensions a few weeks ago. The braids are just past my waist, and I LOVE the length, so I've decided it's time to start growing my hair serously. My own hair is currently about 18 inches (measured from the crown at the front to the ends at the back), so I've got a long way to go!!

I know I need to get a good hairbrush, and I've read somewhere - either on this site or another one (not sure) - that the Mason Pearson boar bristle brush is the best. I've had Mason Pearson's literature for ages, meaning to buy one, and I wouldn't really think of getting one from anywhere else. But in the literature it says that the boar bristle and nylon tuft is the best for my type of hair, which is coarse and thick. I wondered what you all thought, whether I should get the one that they recommend, or would the nylon tufts not be gentle enough for my hair as it gets long? I haven't spoken to Mason Pearson yet because I thought I'd ask them when I phone up to order, but I wanted to ask here first.

Anyway, thanks for such a wonderful message board. You've all really inspired me with your messages and pictures of your beautiful hair. Hopefully, in a few years I'll be able to post photos of me with hair to my waist and longer.
