Anyone cut their own hair?

Hi I'm a noob. I have cut my friends' hair a few times, and my own hair since I was probably 15 (20 now), and my brothers' hair once in a while (nothing complicated.) My boyfriend is contemplating letting me cut his hair b/c he's tired of going out every week to do it (his hair is thick and grows quite fast).

I know and use the ways to section the hair when cutting my own and other girls' or longer styles, but he has a short cut (0 with clippers) that fades up, thicker on top, combed flat forward and comes to spikes at his hair line. I don't know how to section that, or if I even should, and I don't want to mess it all up. Are there any tricks I can use/rules to go by for a haircut like this?

We're also going to buy clippers, and I'm going to cut the top with scissors. Any suggestions for good clippers?
