I heard Pantene makes you lose more hair. I have known a few people who used it, and when I said something they were like "I have been losing more hair lately, I thought it was..." but the power of suggestion can make us see things that aren't really there so I'd like to know if anyone has anything to say about Pantene? Any thick full hair people who have used it for years? Have I been avoiding a great product over some Swedish Study Rumor?

I used Pantene in the past and didn't notice any greater hairloss, but I may not have been paying enough attention. As far as commercial brands go, it's probably the best of any that I had used. However, I've since moved into salon-quality shampoos and conditioners (Aveda, KMS and others), and my hair has never looked or felt better.I will never again use a haircare product that you can buy in a supermarket.> I heard Pantene makes you lose more hair. This is what I've learned from others, not from personal experience, thank goodness! Pantene promotes itself as especially good for people growing their hair long, because it helps with the chore of detangling, and it adds such luster and shine, too... supposedly...The problem is it contains silicones, "...cone" words, like methicone and dimethicone. While initially silicones help hair become smoother and tangle less, in the long run, they do damage. Why? Some background: each strand of hair has basically two parts: the cuticle and the cortex. The cuticle is the scale-like outer layer that lays like shingles on a roof, facing downward, and is supposed to enable hair to "breathe" and give it flexibility. The cortex is the core of the hair where the color is. Silicones coat the cuticle, pretty much gluing it to itself, and thus prevent much-needed moisture from penetrating to the cortex of the strand, as the cuticle is now sealed shut. It takes a while for this to happen, at least several uses, and it doesn't just wash out, even with clarifying shampoos. After using silicone-based shampoos and conditioners for weeks or months, that cortex is damaged, very brittle and thin, so the hair starts breaking quite a bit, and there's not much that can be done. Not only does breakage occur, but the hair becomes dull and lifeless. This is what I've heard, so always check your shampoos for those "...cone" words. I've learned that natural ingredients are best.Jennifer Eve

> Thank you very much! Oh man, I'm going to go check all my lables! Opps, I'm afriad my my shine stuff will all have those cones in them! Ah! I thought that silicone would lock mosture in, not out...oops.They claim they seal the cuticle, which i guess is true, but just not in a good way! I'm afraid the dumpster will be full of hair care stuff soon! Thank you very much! What can you use to make hair shiney without locking out moisture?

Hello Eden,Please remember that this is only what I've learned, not my own experience. Not all people have bad experiences with silicones, but generally, the advice is to stay away from them, as most people tell tales of misery and woe, of breakage and destruction (of pestilence and calamity?).What can you use to make your hair more shiny? Oils. The best is jojoba, but nearly any vegetable oil will do, with olive probably second on the list of preferred choices after jojoba. You don't usually add it to the scalp, but to the length (I assume you have long hair). Depending on your length, pour a small amount onto a palm and rub your hands together. Then run your hands over/through your hair. Comb or brush it, and voila! Something truly good for your hair has just taken place, both moisturizing and adding shine. With my length, I use probably about 1/2-3/4 teaspoon.Good luck!Jennifer Eve

This is probably a stupid question, but are all "-cones" the bad silicon kind? Trimethylsiyamodimethicone? Will baking soda disolve the silicones? I've heard it is the absolute best clarifier, much better than the shapoos, so can it break down what the shampoos can't?How about stuff like 'The Uncolor System" which can be used to remove build-up or if left on longer with heat can remove semi-permanet colors? If it takes off color can it take off silicone?Do you know of a resource where you can look up what the ingredients are and what they do?Thank you.

Hi, i use Pantene as a daily conditioner and i haven't noticed any hair loss. I used to use it alot before and went back to it a few weeks ago. What i have noticed is that it does leave my hair very soft.

This is a very interesting information about Pantene. Now that I think of it, it makes sense, because when I used it some years ago, I remember that it made my hair dull. I was pleased with it at first since I have ultra fine hair and it made my hair appear thicker but also took away the shine.
The Nioxin shampoo has a very clean feel, but the conditioner leaves my hair thin and greasy.(I have oily hair to begin with). I tried a lot of hair products for my thin hair. If anyone has the some problem let me know what works on baby fine hair. thanks.
