One of the things I like about caucasian hair is the variety of styles available due to their hair texture. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to be something I'm not. I see too many Asians (men and women) mess too much with their hair - orange hair, too much goo, afros, etc...In the other spectrum, too many of us have the same cuts and look.
Again, I'm not asian-bashing but I believe in extending our natural beauty without staying with dull and boring styles.
Having said this, for myself, I like medium to long lengths with a lot of texture. I like the beachbum look without looking like I''d spent tons of money of texturizer products.
Is there a recommended cut or styling technique to get more texture? Are there products that would help and still look somewhat natural?
Pin curls + salt texturing sprays. For those who hate the obvious sausage curls that come from an iron. Spray, pin hair into little buns, wait until your hair is dry, undo and tease curls.

It's the only one that doesn't leave my hair frizzy or gummy afterwards. You can find this at drugstores retail stores like Albertsons, Rite-Aid, Walgreens...more people should use FX products. Be sure to use this carefully, so you won't have greasy hair the next day.
You can also try John Frieda Beach Blond Ocean Waves (which is gummy and smells like coconut and vanilla), or KMS Beach Head (which is pricey and makes your hair feel like steel wool afterwards).
PS. I am also a fan of classic styles and lengths. I've seen hair so layered, it can't even be tied up. I think your dislike of the experimentation with Asian hair is due to the technique and method.
One can get a simple layered cut with some dark brown color, instead of light auburn with a trendy shag cut.

Well you need to go to a very good salon or see a very good barber. You need to get a razor cut to have that textured beach bum look. I think I saw this one guy on Extreme Makeover where they turn his moped long hair into this faboulus skater/surfer blonde job. They use the razor cut to have that messy yet relaxed look.
