I am Mexican and 42. I have a full head of grey hair. I am not sure I want to go grey ... not that I have a choice. I have usually had light brown hair and have colored it every other color good for Hispanics, Black, light black, brown, red, mohaganny ... you name it.
I want to go lighter or something bright with the grey but not sure. I dont want to stand out per se but I do want to look hip and young and most of all good!!! Any suggestions on a color and a brand?
What about a cut, right now it is short and that is fine but again, I want to look young and not sure what to do!
Welcome to HairTalk. I am not sure if you want to undertake your coloring at home or go to a salon? One thing to note, many male celebrities are going grayer BUT they are doing gray streaks, tips and highlights. That way they look natural, like you mentioned you want to do, but they still maintain a young, hot, chic look.
I am not sure if you are willing to go to a salon. If you are, you can have them do reverse highlights with foils. The salon would weave darker colors (maybe 2-3 shades of graduated darkness) through your hair with foils and leave gray highlights along your temples and even potentially streaks of gray so that as the darker colored grow out there is no color line.
If going to a salon is out of the question then I would recommend that you check our Robert Craig's website and free consultation.
If you are uncomfortable with that approach, L'Oreal makes ColorSpa for Men and Feria for Men. You can email L'Oreal w/ questions about which product to use and how to layer the color (get a friend to help) by going to:
Or go to a large beauty supply or retail store and buy the L'Oreal and before you color, call the toll free consumer help line to ask how to use the color to achieve the results you want.
Keep in mind that gray hair can be more difficult to color since the texture is different. Some stylists will do a peroxide prerinse to soften and open the cuticles. So if you have a stylist you trust (many men have their hair highlighted and colored these days) and your budget allows for a trip to a salon, you might want to check it out.
Hope that gets you started. Let us know how it goes for you or post if you need more suggestions/tips.
Best wishes, Karen
That which doesn't kill you makes you stronger or drives you totally insane. :-)
You know what we are doing at the salon for some of our grey or salt and pepper clients, is big chunky cool white/silver like highlights.
It is really georgous if you like your grey and the coolness of the color works well on you. Really Fun, and hip. Pretty easy to keep up because they usually blend well with your natural color.
You may need to get this done at the salon. Lifting so light and toning with blues, lavenders and silvers is trickey. Plus the chunks should be stritigically placed (weaved), depending on your cut/style.
