I've been trying to grow my overprocessed hair out for awhile now and I havent dyed it in a few months however my roots are very obvious and It needs to get done but I'm looking for a gentle over the counter hair dye. GENTLE!!
A haircolor product that might be what you're looking for is Loreal Open, which claims to be gentler on your hair because it's a low-ammonia dye, and will be gentle on permed/chemically-treated hair. This might be a downside depending on the difference between your natural color and your dyed color, because though Loreal Open is permanent, it only makes a very subtle change in your hair color (you cannot go from brunette to blonde with Open, for example.) If this doesn't seem to be the best choice for you, there's always the safe option of handing over more cash for a salon job if it's a major priority that your hair be colored correctly. If that absolutely won't work out either, you can always head to the drugstore, grab a bolder hair color (like Loreal Feria, which can do a great job with total color and coverage), and deep-condition your hair EXTREMELY well (which I've heard Feria has an excellent deep-conditioner that goes along with it as well).
The last option if the others won't do it could be just to leave your hair as is. But then we wouldn't have this post, would we? J/K
I hope this information helps even a little, and the best of luck to you!
Or, you could go the deposit only route with a color like Natural Instncts. No ammonia, low peroxide.
If the ends are lighter than the base....but NOT a lot lighter.....Deposit the darker color to bring the ends closer to the base color. It would feel like conitioning on your ends, and you could just keep the ends toned until you were more grown out.
If your ends are really light...this may not work without filling them first.
