first off stop using semipermanent Black dye... if u wanted black with red u needed to dye all ur hair black with a permanent dye and then wait about one week and use a srtrong red dye specially formulated for dark hair with a 40 vol developer or u can also use bleach to highlight ur hair and then use a 20 vol developer with a red dye and dye all ur hair it will not be strong enough to change the black but will deposit the red on all the bleached parts... it sounds like ur hair is very tortured right now so my suggestion is wear a hat for at least a week and then dye ur hair all black with a permanent dye...Do Not Use Feria Dyes!!! the wash out just as bad or worse than semi perm... and remember profecional help is not nessesarly better...

Whooa! I just thought about something

doing highlights on black hair is pretty tough!

why don you use a color remover and remove the color and either re dye it a lighter shade and get red highlights or dye it black and foil bleach the hair (only the parts you want red) then put a red dye on it, I have tried these and they have worked I have dyed my hair ever color possible!! so I hope this helps

Ok for one thing when you apply hair dye always apply it at the ends first, and about 10 minutes before rinsing the color you apply it to the roots, the thing is that the hair root has strong blood supply which makes the hair dye work quicker so its applied almost till the end of the process

Ok now what i would do is dye the roots dark again, to match your hair buy a shade darker than what your hair is so when yoru done it would match your hair, and after getting it the same shade, try highlighting with red again try the caps for highlighting, I like loreal coleur experte, they have nice highlighters, I am not sure if they have red but look into it, they are a bit pricey, but for me there worth it I am highlighting my hair with those products next week!! good luck

My hair story is long, sad, and complicated. :(

A couple months ago, I tried for the first time to dye it black with red streaks. Being stupid, I used semi-permenant black dye. So when I tried to do red streaks (permenant dye) a few days later, they came out very unevenly and not well colored. To fix the mess, I re-died my hair semi-perm black again.

Now, two months later (One month and more than what the semi-perm box said the dye would stay in my hair for), I thought I'd give the red streaks another shot. Well, I have (had) roots of about one inch. All of the excess black had washed out, but my hair was slightly stained.

So. When I put in the red. ONLY MY ROOTS WERE DIED. The rest has the same effect that they had the first time.

My question now is - what do I do? I look awful enough that I'm not planning on looking like this in public any time soon. I'm unsure about dying my hair again, even black, because it's all super-moistureize and has dye residue from last night, plus I don't want it to get screwed up worse. Also, my mother doesn't want to go to a salon unless absolutley necessary, and none are going to be open because of the holiday.

Any ideas/suggestions/good advice?
