QuoteReplyTopic: what is "too much" Posted: September 14 2004 at 10:00pm
I had medium/dark brown hair with nice honey, golden highlights which I liked. 6 months had gone by since I got the highlights so I went to a salon for it to be 'refreshed'
The guy dyed all my hair very dark brown, then while the dye was in my hair he added streaks with bleach, which turned out RED and brassy. I hate it. I wanted it lighter and instead it was very dark and and red.
A month later, I had a glaze put over the hair to tone down the red. This made my hair very dark brown, but at least the red was covered for a while
Now, 3 months have gone by and the red is back. I went to a new salon and was told that too much has been done to my hair that I shouldn't highlight it or dye it. It does look dry and the ends are splitting
I really want my medium/brown hair back witht he lovely carmel highlights.. What can I do? Am I stuck with dark brown/reddish hair until it grows out? Shouldn't a good salon be able to do something for me? any suggestions?

I'm so sorry to hear about your dilemma. It's always traumatizing when color goes wrong at the hands of a professional. I mean, we pay all this money for what - to be depressed for the next 6 months while we try to sort out the mess that shouldn't have happened to begin with? Believe me, I feel your pain. I'm dealing with a horrible mess of my own. I think the only thing I'm going to be able to do is cut my hair off.
Find a new colorist. Be honest about what has been done to your hair. You may need a cut to remove some of the damage. This new person will probably opt to do a semi or demi (non-damaging) in a color close to your own and they will be able to counteract the red by using an ash base. Depending on the condition of your hair, they may advise you to wait on the highlights. If that is their recommendation -I'd take it. Bleach is nothing to mess around with. Trust me.
