I have tried attaching several strands using shrinkies with a double fusion iron (they are the strands that have fallen out after paying 1000 for so-cal extensions by a professional) using the method shown on the dr locks site, I am still having problems. sometimes the shrinkie actually melts and falls apart. other times it is still somewhat hard. What am i doing wrong? please help me save my hair.

If the shrinkie is melting and falling apart, the wand setting is too hot. Are you using Dr Locks shrinkies or something else?

I am using dr locks and a double tipped fusion iron that does not have temp control.

OK. Since we don't know what the temp setting is, you'll have to play with it a bit. I'm sure it's frustrating but I bet you'll get good at it in no time.

You can't turn down the heat so I'd put the shrinkie in, lightly press and release (tapping it) directly in the center of the shrinkie. Don't shrink it down all the way, give it enough room so you can raise or lower the strand just where you want it. When you get the extension where you want it to be, close the wand very lightly around it again for just a moment and let back up. Feel it with your fingertips. It should still be warm and there should still be some give to it. At that point, I'd roll it tightly between the fingers while it cools.

sounds like I have not only the heat problem but also the method. When I was putting them in they stayed hard or melted and did not seem flexible at all. Do you think it may be that the strands need to be tipped again with glue since I am reusing the ones that have fallen out.

what do you use to pull the shrinkie on to the hair?

Your hair should be fine if it's already pretipped. Does the end look like the tip of a shoelace? Is it round and uniform? Sounds like your wand is just frying those babies into a crisp.

I put mine in the exact same way as it shows on the dr locks site: http://drlocks.net/shrinkies_demo.htm - I use the little hook and everything.

I had this problem but the other way round. I purchased an English Fusion Wand but I didn't know that it only heated up one side, when I tried to use it with my shrinkies it only melted one side doh!!! I'm furious with England being so far behind, does anybody know where I can get a wand from that will work in England, I'm so frustrated, otherwise I'm going to have to buy the slimist straighteners I can find and use those!!!

This is one of the best comments I've ever read on these boards. You're hilarious, Amanda.

As an American, I was getting annoyed that the U.K. seemed so far ahead! All the English girls on Quinnster's looked like they could do anything to their heads.

I do think the English seem to be more DIY focused in general. Mainstream extensions in the U.S. are mostly limited to really damaging, expensive "brand" methods. The English also seem to be more synth-savvy; most U.S. salons do human hair. That said, I think the U.S. created the Hairpolice method, but Dome was invented in the U.K., so.....

amanda have you tried a GHD on them?? I wonder if they are too hot.........
I dont really want to spend money on the wand as I only just bought a ghd for a small fortune! ;)

My own straighteners work perfect on them but it don't look very professional when I'm doing my clients that I'm using normal straightening irons, I am looking into getting a voltage converter at the moment so I can buy some from Doctor Locks but I need to know the watts that the Doctor Locks heat clamp is, I've e-mailed them but they ant got back to me yet. Other than this I think I'm going to have to shop around to find the smallest possible straightening iron I can find !!!

Yes I ordered my shrinkies from Doctor Locks, they're fantastic, they took just under a week to arrive xx
