Wow, from all of the posts I thought Portia was going to look horrible. I don't think she looks bad at all - in fact, I think the new look suits her quite well!
It looks like Portia is staying with the bangs and -- God love her -- the long hair. But look closely at this photo. What the heck is going on with those eyebrows?
Long bangs cover up a lady's face. If a woman has a pretty face why cover a good portion of it with hair covering the sides and hair covering the entire forehead with long bangs? That is the "sheepdog effect".
That is why women with long hair, (assuming they are pretty), look better with their hair combed over to the side, or put behind the ears, or their hair worn up, or whatever.
Let's see their face!
Same thing with a guy with long hair if he is handsome. Let's see his face!
Long hair is fine as long as it isn't the "sheepdog effect".
Hair, long or short, is there to compliment someone's attractive face and features, not obscure it!
I'm a big fan of bangs, and a big fan of Portia's hair, and I don't think either works very well here. First of all, what's this trend with styling the bangs and hair straight down (like the new JLH photos)? Always curious why adult women imitate the styling choices of your average five-year-old (IMHO) when they look so much better with a more mature, well, STYLED style (again, IMHO).
As for Portia, this is definitely a downgrade from her days of cascading waves on Ally McBeal. Just not nearly as flattering. Can she pass it off as part of her dysfunctional character on her new Fox show?

I just don't get all the criticism. Do that many people think bangs are wretched? Portia looks even more gorgeous with her hair down. Thanks for the photo links.
No way - Portia is wasy more gorgeous. I am a big thumbs down for the bangs as they detract from her face. She is one of a few blonde women who can fit into the exotic beauty category usually reserved for dark haired girls. Grow em back.
I remeber her hair at its most gorgeous in her first appearance on Ally Mcbeal. There was a scene where Ally is in the bathroom and Portia comes in with her hair up for work. They are going down to the bar so she lets it out of the pins and it comes flowing down in waves all the way down to her waist. She does a small shake to it and it's perfect. Oh the magic of hairstylists standing 6 feet away waiting to make your hair look good!
I agree, she looked better without the bangs. She is a pretty lady although my favorite on that show was the pretty Asian-American woman Lucy Lui.
Speaking of Lucy Liu, it appears she and Portia have something in common besides long, gorgeous hair. From www.clublez.com, a truly outstanding site...
Jane Magazine, 2003 October issue: (excerpt from article) "How many times do I have to kiss a woman before I'm gay?"
Lucy has always been into visual arts-she's had gallery shows on boath coasts featuring her multimedia collages. So the first thing she did when she moved into her Michigan dorm room was decorate her walls with pictures, including photos of nude chicks. "They were mainly magazine ads, like pictures of clothes and quotes or a Calvin Klein Obsession ad", Lucy recalls. "But Michigan wasn't that cosmopolitan. So my friends would come into my room and look at my wall in shock. I'm like, 'What? Just because there are naked women on the wall doesn't mean I'm a lesbian.'"
Then she kind of does that Seinfeld "not that there's anything wrong with that" thing while cranking the interview up a notch; "But I don't have any-I think people sometimes get the wrong impression when they're like, 'Oh, well, so-and-so was straight and then she was gay, and now she's straight again,' you know? But it's like, how many times do I have to kiss a woman before I'm gay? Everybody wants to label people. Sometimes you just fall in love with somebody, and you're really not thinking about what gender or whatever they happen to be. I think that if I happen to fall in love with a woman, everyone's going to make a big deal out of it. But if I happen to fall in love with a man, nobody cares."
I ask Lucy if it was weird to kiss scrawny Calista. "Strangely enough, it wasn't," she answers, laughing. "For me it felt really familiar. It was just very sensual, but not sexual. There's a difference between the two. When something is sexual, you feel it deep down. And if it's sensual, you let it sort of pour over you. Anyway."
Portia is one of the people we'll never see short hair on( somewhere, Gord is doing a little dance) If I remember right, she said how horrible it was cutting her short for the movie Mermaids, and has said she'd never go back. Her hair was still past her shoulders in that, and she considers that 'short' and didn't like it.
It's probably needless to say I don't like the bangs. Horrid.

I think that the bangs really soften her look, I like them! However, the bangs are a little heavy for my taste, I would not cut them so wide across her face, or so far back...
I also think this shows she would look great with just about any hairstyle...
