The Pixie Is Over

In 2002-2003, Ashley Judd, Alyssa Milano, Kirsten Dunst, and Marley Shelton all cut their into very short pixies. All were very attractive and it appeared to be catchy. Ashley and Alyssa were recently seen with hair growing out and Kirsten had a long ponytail in recent interviews. At the premiere of "Anchorman," Marley Shelton may be only two inches longer than her pixie, but it looks like she has longer hair put up.

The pixie is dead in Hollywood. The life was brief.

Sharon Stone and Jamie Lee Curtis are still out there. Maybe it's an age thing?

Actually, judging from shots of Marley on Wireimage.com, I thought it was just a few inches longer than her pixie -- sort of like she wanted enough to play with and get mussed up (which I kind of really like the thought of). I'm not hating it at all...

Umm...actually, all but three of those examples (Alanis, Cecile, and, though I'm skeptical as to the reasons, Edie) have been short for a while or have actually GROWN their hair a bit (e.g., Joan Jett no longer has has the blonde buzz and Erykah Badu has one of the biggest afros around these days).

And if you think about it, several of the well know super short wearers HAVE grown their hair, just not all the way out (e.g., Alyssa, Brittany Daniel, Josie Davis, Winona Ryder, Natalie Raitano, amongst others). Not sure the pixie is dead, but longish short styles seem to have supplanted it a bit.

Jerky, you must know that's a large afro wig Erkah is wearing, she still has the short close crop. It doesn't grow from a shaved head to a large afro in a month. And you are right, some of those women have had short hair for awhile and they are keeping it short, which means they and their men must like their short haired look.



And Rod, anyone who has read your posts knows you have an agenda. You repeat yourself like a broken record about short hair on women. In fact you just did it again, you said that short hair is uncommon, not prefered and "unique" on women. Look around, it's not that unique, it's fairly common.And you don't know what every man prefers. Do you know the billions of men on earth?

If someone doesn't believe me about you Rod, and your continual statements about short hair on women, they can read through your posts on the Short Hair board. I'm not knocking you as a person Rod, of course I don't even know you, but your posts on this subject are redundant, to say the least. That's not a knock, it's a fact.


To get back to the subject, it's like Brent said, there are billions of women on earth who wear their hair many different lengths. A few examples of how a few celebrity women wear their hair, (my examples or yours) doesn't prove anything one way or the other.
That is rational, and it's a fact.


Nowadays there are no trends really, you can pick ten different celebrity women who wear their hair ten different lengths, from the Alec Wek no hair look to very long hair and everything in between. Diversity of styles is a fact.

miss Brenda, for some reason you’ve chosen to attack me. Somehow me pointing out that the pixie is out in Hollywood interferes with your self-esteem. I never said short hair was out in Hollywood or that it was out with women around the world. Read the post. It’s only about pixie hair. I never said short hair is uncommon, but that men who prefer are. That’s my opinion. Perhaps it’s wrong, but it shouldn’t warrant a personal venomous attack. That is truly insulting and annoying.

My posts are redundant? This is a board where there are at least a half dozen people constantly post how every celeb needs to cut their hair short and few post how every celeb needs long hair. On the short hair board, some people constantly post how every woman should go pixie short.

My opinions seem to be unpopular with you and your solution is to bully me into not expressing my opinion.

Miss Brenda, I do think you saw his observation as an attack upon you. My dad and my best friend prefer short hair on women. I think nearly 90% of women look their best long, even very long. Life would be dull if we all thought in synch. Truce?
BTW, I don't think the pixie will ever go out of style among "stars", esp. with extensions being the rage among the rich. I wish women who are thinking about copying their favorite celebritiy's cut would foresee that soon again their icon's hair may be long and flowing, but their own will be stuck growing at a frustrating human pace. Can someone tell me what the difference between a pixie and crop? I've always thought that a pixie was slightly longer on top, around the crown and had longer bangs, and was slightly more feminine. A crop was shorter and choppier. Maybe I'm mistaken?

I personally don't like ultra short hair on women, myself included, but there are definitely certain women who can pull it off, and some in fact even look better with such a cut. Someone mentioned Halle Berry and I have to say I love her with short hair. Forget about feminine or unfeminine, if you can't tell if you're a man or a woman, my advice would be to not cut your hair that short. Halle Berry looks very feminine and I actually prefer her short hairstyles as opposed to the long ones she's sported in the past, like in the film "Gothika" (and I don't know if it was her real hair/extensions/wig) don't suit her at all. It makes her look stringy and unkempt. I think she looks good with a little length, but not the longer looks she's tried in the past. It's not a pixie, but I like Sharon Osbourne with the shorter hair. It just suits her. I don't, however, like the short haircut on Marley Shelton. She doesn't need to keep her hair ultra long, but I definitely like her better with some length, even if only to the shoulders. The very short haircut isn't terribly flattering. She looks good, but she's looked better in the past with longer hair. As for Alyssa Milano, I wasn't really feeling the short short hair at all. She did look feminine, but I still felt that it was a waste of such pretty hair. I think she looks better when she keeps her hair midlength. I also didn't like it when it was very long back when she was on "Melrose Place" for a while. Jamie Lee Curtis looks better with short hair in my opinion because the long hair draws out her face and makes it look even longer and more rectangular/angular. The shorter look definitely goes well with her face shape and overall body type. I wish she would grow it out a little to have more fun with (still keeping it short) because I think that the length she has it at right now might be borderline too short. She doesn't have much body to her hair, at least that's what I've noticed. This may sound funny, but I actually thought the only time her hair looked good long was in the movie "Halloween." Yes it was pouffy and so 1970s, but at least it looked fuller. Her face is sort of narrow, so limp, fine hair that clings to her cheeks isn't a good look, and unless she can do something about the volume, I would stick to the shorter lengths. She looks great all around, at least in my opinion. I didn't like the matching bobsy twin haircuts that Kirsten Dunst and Maggie Gyllenhaal got right after "Mona Lisa Smile" at all. Kirsten looks better with her California laid back long hair. She has an amazing natural blonde hair color that a lot of people would die for and it was sort of weird to see it when it was that weird reddish hue she sported for "Spider Man" and "Mona Lisa Smile." But getting back to my point, she has this great color and she lops off all of her hair so all that you get is this Mia Farrow ala "Rosemary's Baby" cut and it didn't fit. She has a wide face, sort of roundish and heart shaped all at once, and the ultra short hair only emphasized that. Maggie Gyllenhaal has gorgeous shiny brown hair with a natural wave and she is much better suited to longer styles. She would have been better off going with a slightly longer style, even if above the shoulder, but I wouldn't recommend she keep up with the cut. Her hair looked good in "Mona Lisa Smile" in the old time styles. Sorry for the long post. That's it for now.
