QuoteReplyTopic: Short and curly - Mission Impossible? Posted: January 06 2001 at 3:51am
I have thinnish wavy to downright curly red hair which is, at the moment about armpit length (I`m a girl). When it airdries, it is very curly, but not defined enough to look any good. For an image change (before I decide to wear hats for the rest of my life) I was thinking of cutting my hair really short and going for a "bedhead" kind`ve look. The hairdresser has told me on prior occasions that cutting my hair too short would only make it "boofier" and frizzier. This may be true, but is there any hope in me getting my hair cut really short and it looking good? Can anyone offer me some advice or hints on how they manage to keep their short curls looking good (on a budget!)???? Thanks a lot.
Oh, and I forgot to add that my face shape is probably closest to an oval shape - kind`ve thin and long. I hope someone can help me here, because I`m really anxious about whether a short style will suit me...?
I have thick hair though, and I know I could totally end up with a frizzy `fro due to the fact that I`m not allowed to use styling products at my work!
I will attach a style that I thought was cute on me, but I am afraid I probably won`t be able to replicate. I would actually style the front flat (parted at the side) and sort of finger the back half of my head into spritely curls with some pomade.
Of course this is easy to do for girls with straight hair -- we should be so lucky!
Anyway -- best of luck and let me know if you find out anything new!
you have just described my hair and i just cut it short yesterday and i love it! dont listen to your hairdresser. i`ve gotten that line before. you might even want to find a hairdresser who is more comfortable cutting short hair. the other reply to your message has a picture that is similer to my hair cut, shot on top and longer in the back, that is the haircut you want! my hair dresser calls the layering style "square" instead of rounded to the face. this keeps it from being too poofy. i`m having fun with bobby pins that never would have held my hair before. i believe that us curly heads secretly look better with short hair and there`s a conspiracy keeping that fact from us. good luck!

Conspiracy? Fact?? Oh please... it is your opinion that short curly hair looks better than long curly hair. It happens to be my opinion that women look better with long curly hair than short curly hair. Does my opinion establish the universal truth on the matter? No... and neither does yours. Give me a break.

I got my hair cut short (somewhat) I got it layered with the top layer about ear length (when curly) and the bottom layer shoulder length with other layers in between. I love it, it looks so cute. Sorry I don`t have a picture to offer. Ask a stylist about layering your hair in a way that accentuates your face. -Coll
I had long, very curly/frizzy hair my whole life, which I would fry with hair color every now and then. two years ago i cut all of my hair off. Pixie cut! Life was much easier, as you can guess. now i really like my hair length, it`s different lengths, but anywhere from three to five inches. many people close to me say that comparing my long (past the shoulders) hair, my super short hair, and this length, this length wins. and i like it best, too. my hair is curlier at the top and sides, and the curl relaxes towards the back. when i was growing it to this length i had to plaster it with gel, usually the l.a. looks for frizzy hair. now i can`t do that. i have to let it be softer. i`ve tried everything, as you can relate to. right now i`ve taken to Duke`s Pomade. i have to refresh it at least once during the day, but that is unavoidable. it is a little longer around my face, so i can have fun with barettes, clips, and bobby pins. i also pull it back by those babushka-bandana-type things that tie behind your neck. i get lots of complements on that. i try to flatten it and flip it at the base of my neck, but i often lose that battle. it just curls up back there. so i wear my hair flat around my face or at the top of my head with a clip or two, then i tease the very back of the top of my head so the curls are a tad higher than what`s going on at the front. it was hard after i cut it, but two years later i`m So glad i did it. i used to just let my hair be one length and just let the length and a ton of products weigh it down when it was long. no style whatsoever. this gives me much more opportunites. i never ever even bother to straighten my hair, not in salons and not at home. it Never has worked. it just makes my hair kinky no matter what. if you`re thinking about short, be brave. my hairdresser didn`t want to cut it short, and tried to talk me out of it. then she preceeded to give me bad short haircuts. i can recommend someone in the phoenix area and someone in the berkeley area. the guy in phoenix did such a fantastic job i wanted to Cry!
