is it possible to alter either temporarily or permanently the growth pattern to which your hair grows...

a hair-stylist i have seen about my hair believes that i may have altered my hair`s growth pattern with the use of the straightener on my curly hair...and that may be why it seems to grow it funny now...

it forms a ridge in the center of my head now...like a mini-mohawk...where the hair`s higher in the middle but shorter on the opposing sides...

she thinks i MAY HAVE altered my growth pattern -- any thoughts on whether this is actually possible or not -- or was i just speaking to an ignorant stylist?
