I trim mine about every 12 weeks. I think thats why retain length. I dust the ends but what works for me is when I section my hair into about 4 parts and twist that part before dusting. It doesn't come out extremely straight which I like because my hair is layered.

Some say to trim once every 6 weeks, but I say go longer. As long as you are taking care of your ends you shouldnt need much of a trim. Direct heat can be a culprit in needing frequent trims. I would go for a "dusting" (aka microtrim) which is a really small trim that way you don't loose most of the length that you grew, the few weeks before.
Yes you can learn to do it yourself. When I do my trims, I been doing mine for a while when relaxed and natural, I never went by having even hair but much more about healthy hair. Part sections then trim the exact same amount. After I did that I would make sure to keep them moisturized and in well condition.
