QuoteReplyTopic: How do I cover the obvious? Posted: March 21 2005 at 12:51pm
Hi Ladies. Please help me....I need your advice. I suffer from hair loss problems and recently got a custom made piece. I love it, except the part can look a little fake at times. Can you recommend any product that might help to disguise the mesh part? I only need to cover a little of it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hey girlie! It's good to see ya, and I'm glad to hear the piece looks
good. I can't wait to see pics. Now let's see...disguising the mesh
part. I'm assuming you mean that where the hair parts, you can see the
woven mesh, instead of skin (duh, this is obviously what you mean). I
wonder if a little hair mascara, dabbed on strategically, would help,
or some sort of cosmetic product, like concealer, in a flesh tone. I
assume the part isn't too wide; it's just the actual mesh that's
probelmatic.
Lemme think about this a bit, and see if there's anything I can come up with from my usual hair haunts....
:)

Jenny: How did I know that you would be lurking around here today? Check you e-mail girly, there are plenty of pics waiting for you. Yes, you are under the right assumption, I'm trying to cover the woven mesh and no, the part is not too wide, it's just right. I tried Toppik already, which never fails to disappoint me, so I'm off looking for the next disguise. Let me know what you come up with. Thanks for your help.

On the same note - a trick that I use on my natural part sometimes, when it seems to be showing too much, it a touch of a smoky taupe colored powder eye shadow. I have dark hair and it seems to disguise my scalp really well. It may work on the mesh too...
Oh my gawd...I just saw your photos, Miamigirl, and your hair looks
fabulous. I love it! It's so natural, and the colors (which you can
really see in the outside shots) are stunning. I can't see any
weirdness in the part at all from the photos; it looks totally natural
to me. I also think with some wear, the mesh may become a bit more
"worn down" and blend into the scalp more. But again, in the photos,
you can't see anything. I love the way it's styled, too. It looks
really cute with your front hair swept back, and with it all down, it's
damned sexy--nice and voluminous at the crown, which is awesome.
I seriously encourage you to post these photos here--black out your
face or shoot from the back, whatever--so that everyone who comes to
this site with hairloss and thinks some extension stylist has the
solution can see what's possible with a topper.
Many, many congratulations, girl. I know it's been a long and ardous
road finding a good cosmetic solution, but you've finally found it.
Congratuations to your girl (Peggy?) who hooked it up, too. She
obviously knows what she's doing. You look drop-dead gorgeous!

Thanks Jenny. You're the best. The part that concerns me is probably not too visible in the pictures, but it's definitely noticeable to me (and my boyfriend), probably because we're looking for problems. Anyways, it's right where the part starts near my forehead. You can clearly see the mesh (if you're really paying attention). I wish there was a simple way to cover it.
For anyone that wants to see the pics, here they are:
Honestly honey...I think it looks TOTALLY FAB AND I dont see any mesh at all...Perhaps your just noticing it becouse your looking for it? I think its beautiful....congrats!
Well, I can't see anything, but I'll certainly take your word for it.
So it's the mesh part right at the very front? I wonder if this is the
same issue some people have with lace-front wigs, and I believe most
people who use lace-fronts have to put some makeup in the front. SAS
might be a good person to ask about this; you might also want to do a
search on lace-fronts at BHM, assuming this is the same issue I'm
thinking of. Now, with a lace-front, you'd use some bonding glue to
glue it down, and then maybe pat some pressed powder on top, or a bit
of foundation, I'm thinking.
Anyone else?
Thanks for sharing those photos, girl!
:)

Thanks so much ladies. I know that it's not evident from the pictures, but believe me...it's visible. Yes, Jenny it's the mesh part right at the very front...the most noticeable area. I'll start searching. I already tried foundation and it didn't work that well. I'm going to see my stylist after work tomorrow and hopefully she can do something, but I think that to an extent, the part will always look a little fake.
Hmm...I'm remembering now that with lace-fronts, I think a lot of women
sort of incorporate a few little "baby hairs" into the front mesh part
to make it look more natural. I'm sure your stylist will know how best
to proceed, though. Again, it's beautiful! :)

wow, looks gorgeous! Jenny is right, it is a very sexy style, and the hair itself looks really nice. I cannot tell from the pics where the mesh shows, so I'm not quite sure what you mean by it showing. Do you have any of your own hair in front that you can leave out to maybe hide the mesh?
It looks great and I'm with everyone else I can't see the mesh. I
can tell that your scalp looks slightly dark in the part but not actual
distinct mesh. can you try styling it slightly differently?
maybe one of those styles where the hair crosses over itself?
then that should cover the part entirely...

Thanks ladies. The mesh doesn't show in the pictures, but you can definitely see it up close or in the sun. I'll try to take a closer picture tonight.
Mochachip: Good idea...I'll try a criss cross pattern
Purrmachine: Unfortunately, your head has to be shaved in some areas for a piece like this (bonded) and my styist shaved most of the hair that I could pull through. I don't think that she realized that I needed to do that, so now I'll just have to wait until some grows out, but I'll definitely try to conceal things that way when the time comes.
Well, I don't see it myself, but I'll take your word for it. At least
you know that since it doesn't show up in photos, you can have your
photo taken and not worry about it showing! :)
This is an odd suggestion, but there's this stuff called "Liquid
Latex". You might have heard of it- it's like latex body paint that
dries stretchy, so you can wear it kinda like clothes. I was thinking,
if you got a tiny bit of it in flesh-color, and then dotted it on with
a tiny paintbrsuh right on the mesh, it might cover it up? Sort of like
a skin-part on a wig, except DIY.
Hi Amm. Thanks for the compliments. It's a custom made piece that I ordered directly from my stylist, who specializes in hair restoration. She's amazing and completely saved me after the hairlocs nightmare (which I'm sure you can relate to). Here's her info in case anyone is interested. I'm not trying to sound like and ad, but she has gone above and beyond all of my expectations, so I whole heartedly recommend her. She works with clients all over the U.S., not just in LA where I live.
Miamigirl: You look great! No way that hair isn't growing out of your head! I wear something similar, and am wondering if you thought the mesh was too dark, too light or just visible. Sure can't tell from your pics!! Do you wash this yourself?
If anyone knows of someone in So. Florida who cleans human hair, pls. let me know. Thanks!

Hi Kelley. I feel like the mesh is too visible and my stylist agrees, which is why I now have bangs and am changing out the base of my piece for something that blends better. I do wash it myself, once or twice a week and then once a month the piece is completely removed and washed on it's own.
