QuoteReplyTopic: Scoop On Creating The Archive! Posted: April 03 2005 at 12:24pm
Hi all,
Just wanted to let you know that just as you have all discovered...what looks easy may not be once you are in there slugging away. :-)
I started putting the Archive together and first thought...OK...I will just do a big link. Well that brought all sorts of questions like what happens if the original thread gets damaged in some way? Although it is unlikely...never say never. And as I was re-reading the first thread I kept thinking...I need to preserve this somewhere really safe.
Arggghhh. So then I had all sorts of problems with getting the links to work. And in some cases, links are not working in general like for Docs.
Anyway...for any of you peeking...I am still working on it and will not give up. It is just going to take a little more time than I had anticipated. Software...sheessssh.
So if you are peeking...know that this is definitely going to be a work in progress and I will not stop working on copying threads until I am sure that all the links work and everything is copied appropriately.
I am going to try to avoid editing as much as possible but in some cases will be removing the "wow that was cool" replies unless they are really important to keep.
I will also include the link to the original post at the bottom of each copied thread...so that we have a backup if anyone wants to pop in and see the full blow by blow version. :-)
Thanks for your patience and all your help. This is such great stuff.
My kudos to all of you here.
Karen

That which doesn't kill you makes you stronger or drives you totally insane. :-)
I PM'ed you on this, but just so everyone's up to speed on what the problem is with the links, here goes...
Any links collected (or referenced) before the
replatforming (a month ago or so) had a different naming convention in the URL. So, now,
for example, they all have a TID= (followed by whatever the ID # of the
thread is). Before the replatforming, they were all, I think, AMB%
(followed by a string of code and then the ID #). So, all of the links
that have that old AMB naming convention are now obsolete and will just
redirect people to the HairTalk main page, unfortunately.
The Extensions 101 thread and the Bridget thread haven't been updated
since the replatforming,
so those ones will definitely include some of those old, obsolete
links,
as well as any threads created before the replatforming that
cross-reference other threads. Hopefully, all the ones I compiled the
other day include the new TID URLs and not the old AMB ones, but if
not, it's just a matter of finding them, and I'm sure I can figure it
out. I'm not sure exactly why the old URLs don't redirect the user to
the new URLs, but they definitely don't; the Webmaster might have an
idea though. The good news is, no content was lost; the bad news is,
it's impossible to use an old link to find it. It may just be a matter
of changing the URL (maybe the ID numbers remained the same, but the
webmaster would know best). This would apply to all areas of Hair Talk,
I think, not just the Extensions area.
I've been through most of these links in the past week, though, so if
you're looking for something specific, I'll probably have a good idea
of where it is--the FAQs section (hopefully) contains only updated
links and there's always the search tool, so one way or another, we'll
find it!
