I'm wondering how many of you cut your own hair. Since I was 17, I've always cut my own hair because hairdressers don't give me the hair cut I want.

Sometimes I only give myself a trim, and other times I cut quite a lot more off, depending on my moods. My hair is now waist length, although I'll be cutting a few inches off soon, maybe to my bra strap but no shorter, yet anyway.

Most of the people who try it like their results. Some have had results they didn't like. Just make sure that for your first trim or first few trims that you do not cut right to your shortest desired length.

In other words if you're planning to trim 1/2 inch then for your first time try only trimming 1/4 and then wait a few weeks. Give yourself a chance to practise. The thing with self trimming is, you are now on your own schedule so you can trim as often as you want and as little as you want.

I cut my own hair too.  I started when I was 12 and had one of those 80s short cuts...I actually did it pretty good the first time!  But messed it up horribly the second time and had to get a pro to fix it.  I've just been giving myself blunt cuts ever since then (for the past 18 years) which are much easier.

Hi Jenny21,

Sure would like to see a pic of your hair to "help" you decide how much to trim, if any.  I imagine it's quite lovely as it is.

I trim my own splits.  I haven't had the ends shaped in almost 3 years.  But if I decided to do so, it would be pretty easy to do so myself, since the ends are so thin (I couldn't go wrong).  But when I do decide to have a shaping trim, I'll probably let a trusted friend do it.

Wow I tried the feyes trim method about 3/4 of an inch and I am very impressed with the way it looks.  It is easier to comb and just looks fuller at the ends and more even.  Looks like I found my new way to trim,  and as P.B. said I am o my own scedule now which is great.  I never have to worry about the salon trims gone bad again  and it's free.  Next time will be October about the same 3/4 of an inch or less,  then the blunt cut will really be nice hopefully to my elbows by then.

With one exception in 2002, I have been cutting my hair myself since I was 20 (I'm 25). How I got to this is an interesting story. Before that, I had a short back and sides haircut, and I didn't enjoy going to the barber's. Nor did I think that hair that short flattered me. I started putting off haircuts more and more, finally letting my hair grow for about 6 months. My last short back and sides cut was in December 1999. After a few months, it grew out into something like a 1970s down over the ears haircut. I decided to try trimming it in front and liked the results. Over the next few years, I perfected the art of self-cutting. It was not without a few mistakes, but finally I found that I could do it, and the easiest for me was to cut it so that it's a more or less chin-length bob, which I think also the length that  looks best on me. What I do is I cut it one length all around (in my new flat, I have a kind of rear-view mirror in the washroom, that should help) and pull hairs that want to stick out from underneath and cut them. This is a rudimentary version of what stylists often do with bobs, to pin up the top layer and cut the bottom layer shorter so it will slightly curl under.

Now what I have described is easier said than done. It takes practice and of course you do this at your risk. But I just feel like doing it because:

1) I haven't liked the experience of going for a haircut since I was a child

2) I know someone won't damage my hair

3) I save $$$$$ (okay, Czech crowns as I now live in Prague)

I've been doing it for a long time. It's very convenient, obviously, you do it when you need or want to. I usually try to keep it simple, I will re-angle my sides, and trim the bottom. If I'm feeling bold I will put an additional layer into the back and sides about an inch or so from the bottom, just for a little lift. My hair is thick and wavy so imperfections in my cuts are unnoticeable.   I usually have my hubby fix the back though. I can never get that perfect. Having a good pair of scizzors is an excellent investment for anyone who does this.

Every three years or so I go to a professional, and I really appreciate the prof. work more than ever when I do go in.   And it's such a luxury then. I haven't done this in ages though. I honestly can't recall my last professional cut. I think it may have been March or May of 2003.
