I'm going to give my hair a break from shrinkies...so, seeing that I cannot cornrow or pinchbraid a weft on, is there anyother suggestions?
I was thinking of doing little braids across, then sewing weft onto the top of each of the braid, does that make sense? Maybe four or five braids per row?
HELP!!

Yup. That's what they do when you get wefts sewn in. It's a skill, tho, cuz it's not exactly a 'braid' - it's really a cornrow. Hard to do on yourself, even when you're good at it.
My suggestion, having worn sewn in wefts forEVER, is to find a stylist that does that. You'll have the best luck and the best price at a salon that does black women's hair - they are ALL ABOUT braiding. You can just have the back done - 3 rows or so - and do the sides yourself with micros or shrinkies and be really careful. that would look the best - it's the sides that give a weave away hands down. Mullet-A-Go-Go.
That's a good idea to give your head a rest - weaves rock, no matter what you've read to the contrary. And they work on fine hair, too. You just need a really good stylist. Don't be afraid to go right into a salon and ask them if they do tracks, and just come right out and ask if they can deal with Euro hair. They'll tell you!

If you do little braids, pull them tight and bind them with thread, then sew the wefts on top, they might work, but they'll get loose very very quickly. You will have a better result with 3 or 4 cornrows.
I used to pay my stylist $20 a row. Can you believe that?! She first charged me $15 and I told her that wasn't EVEN enough, so I upped her rate for her over time. Considering folks in LA who cater to no-nothing white folks (no offense meant, just the truth) charge $75 plus EACH TRACK, I was appalled.
Point being that getting some tracks (cornrows) put in will be inexpensive if you go to a neighborhood salon.
I think I will try that, there is a little corner store called hair weavers - terrible neighborhood...but I bet they do great weaves..so would I be able to sew the weft on myself or should they do it?

Syren: Have you ever gotten a full weave, or just tracks on the bottom.
Metalgirl's spoken a lot about the full-cap thing, which sounds
intriguing. I'm still a little confused about how they're applied so
that all your hair is covered without the wefts or some of your real
hair showing. (I believe it's done in a spiral pattern, but for some
reason, I'm not grasping the concept.)
Any more experiences from white girls with tracks or weaves? I'd like to hear more.

Octavia, they do the sewing as part of the price of the service. The stylist can do a better job sewing and faster. Sometimes they have to fold the edges of the weft and tack them down.
Jenny, I've never had that spiral thing but I saw lots of black women get it done. Once the spiral was in, they would sew wefts right on top of it and somehow it didn't come out looking spirally - it looked really good!
I only had 2 or 3 tracks.

Jenny, i saw the spiral thing done on a woman of color on Extreme Makeover once...i was amazed!
the guy started at the very crown of her head...and around he went..she
looke she had a big spiderweb on her head when he was done...and then
he sewed...and sewed...and SEWED.
she had gorgeous flowing Euro hair when he was done, but i have to
believe that even after a few weeks, she'd begin to notice some
looseness...unless black hair doesn't grow as fast.
you might be able to google Extreme Makeover and then drill down into the individual episodes...it was last season.
has someone been swimming in the shallow end of the gene pool again?
I had cornrows in before I tried microclamps...I had her bring the wefts to the top of the head, then she cornrowed the wefts in sideways on the top and sides of my hair...I usually use a headband to pull my hair back so it did not show at all....she moved away in Oct so I have been doing the shrinkie/mircoclamp instead..The cornrows lasted about a month before she had to re-do them. My real hair was in much better condition with the braids then with any of the loose extensions...
so I am seaching for another person who will do it cheap!

When I was getting the full weave, my stylist did the spiral cornrow thing and sewed the hair onto that base. At the very top, it wasn't the most natural looking because there was no natural part in it. Nowadays, they have those 'closure' pieces that you would sew on top to mimic the natural partline.
I would keep that in for 8-10 weeks at a time. I wore that method for about 3 years or so. I liked it, but because the braids trapped a lot of sweat, I did suffer from the infamous 'stink head' syndrome that could be smelled when the hair was wet. When it was dry, it had only a slightly musty odor. Oh, well, it looked good...
In that 3 year time period, that was the best my natural hair ever looked, each time she took down the weave.
So, it's not the most natural or most comfortable, but it is gentle on the hair.
