hey ladies - i'm gonna get my new pinchbraids installed may 2nd. can barely wait...anyhoo...

i'm thinking i'm gonna go blonder...even a platinum. my hair is a light brown/dark blond. so, my question is about root maintenance as my hair grows like a weed. it there anything you can put on your roots between touch ups to cover new growth just along the part and hairline framing your face? i know someone mentioned manic panic here before...will it take on darker unbleached hair? my concern is that according to the bleach directions i should wait until there is a 1/2" of new growth before i touch up, which i think will make me crazy.

i know jenny has mentioned the going blonde forum before ... which i will check out. just curious if anybody had any suggestions.

Well, I can't tell you anything about manic panic because I haven't used it.  What I CAN tell you is that going platinum blonde is the reason I have to wear extensions in the first place!

Well, I think with platinum, it's hard to go more than a month without touching up your roots, unless you like the look of roots, in which case you're in luck. Either way, the key to avoiding damage is to not overlap on the already-bleached areas; only touch up the new growth. And this applies whether you touch up your hair every 3 weeks or every 2 months. I wouldn't touch it up any more frequently than 3 weeks though, because it can lead to scalp irritation. Theoretically, if you only got the new growth, and not the already-bleached areas, more frequent touch-ups wouldn't cause any more damage. But in reality, the more often you bleach, the more you run the risk of overlapping and thus damage. A tiny bit of overlap is unavoidable, really.

The Manic Panic (I think you're talking about the Virgin Snow toner), as well as Shimmer Lights and ARTec White Violet and the Born Blonde toners, can all be helpful in toning down brassiness, but they won't lighten your roots at all. I have heard of people using baby powder to camoflauge roots. And some people--especially if they're hiding gray--have success with those hair mascaras, but I've yet to find one that's suitable for light blonde or platinum hair.

Good luck! :)

thanks for the info!

i'm still debating for all the typical reasons - damage, upkeep, etc etc. i feel like i just need a change for summer. thanks jenny - i'm going to do a little search for the hair mascara, but i think you're right. part of it is accepting that's how it goes.

i'll keep you posted....

CCROSS  i recommend using Blondor bu Wella it is ammonia free therefore is gentler on your hair and it also cancel out any red / dark tones in your hair making you platinum every time. This little pack cost me £10 and consists of 1) Creme Hair colour base 2) 2 X booster powders, you then have to buy 40% peroxide seperately and use that also. (full instructions inside)

Its not as harsh as a bleach and is as gentle as any other tints although it lifts up to 5 shades. You can buy this at your local Salon Services.

Also a good straightening iron protector is this.....

Its by Matrix and is an iron smoother, its good for people with bleached hair as it puts an invisible shield into your hair (Not silicoln) to protect against heat damage up to 450 degrees F and 230 degrees C.  It also smells stunning and makes your hair really soft. This cost me £8 again from Salon Services.

:)

I only do my roots like every two months, though  i don't like the look of roots much, i refuse to do my roots on my own, and i refuse to pay more often than that. the wonder of shimmer lights or 'purple shampoo' as the last stylist called it haha  has also helped (but not the roots) but def made my roots not stick out as much.

two of my gf's just went back to brown. i digress....

lol

i love plastikhaar

Well, here's what I've been using:

This Feria 205 gets me from my natural color (light brown/dark blonde) to platinum--no red tones whatsoever. My only complaint about it is that it has two powder bleach packets, so when you're doing your roots, you have to be careful to get every single hair, because it's not spreadable (hope that makes sense).

The image “http://www.lorealparisusa.com/haircolor/products/feria-popupwin/img/blonde/205_pack.gif” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

This one--the Feria 200--produces virtually the same result (I use them interchangably, really), but it's just slightly more yellow, as opposed to white, and it's more liquid, so it spreads more easily.

The image “http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0000537KP.01._SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

This one--the Loreal 10NB--is the one I used for more than 10 years, before I switched to the Feria last year. This is considered more of a high-lift peroxide (because it has no separate bleach packet), but if you overlap, it can still be damaging. This would take my hair to almost platinum, but not quite, and it oxidizes (gets a bit brassy) over time.

My natural hair is extremely dark and I dye it platinum blonde:

From this:    to this:

I dye it once a month and in between bleaches I pat a small amount of baby powder on my dark roots which may sound funny but it works great to lighten them up!

I also use a violet mousse from Goldwell to get rid of any brassy colors. I get out of the shower spray some mousse in my hands and put it just where I need it in my hair. No need to wash it out and I like it a million times better than any purple shampoo. The bottle looks like this and the color is called "violet 10V":

I'm amazed at how good your color is, Kristin. My boyfriend's hair is brown--about the color of your natural hair--and when we tried to bleach it, he looked like Bozo the Clown. It never lifted above a pale reddish color, and it was so uneven. What kind of bleach/developer do you use? :)

Kristin,

Do you bleach your own or have it done in a salon?  When I had my bleach incident that broke off my hair at only a few inches, I decided never to go platinum again.   I don't have weak/thin hair naturally.  It's actually thick and used to be down to my bum when I used to dye it ultra light blonde with before I went platinum.  Then I decided to go platinum and I was platinum for about almost close to a year when it broke off.  I grew it out for about a year (which looked terribly ugly) and then started having it highlighted at a salon.   Within about 6 months my hair started breaking off again.  Seems like my hair can handle bottle dye from the local Wal-Mart, but can't handle the salon powder/high volume developer.  How do you continue to bleach your hair while it's still growing out?  I know you're not supposed to bleach over bleach, and I never do, but some how no matter what hair stylist does my hair, I get breakage from every one of them.

I've dyed it myself before when I couldn't get in to the salon quick enough. That was along time ago and I also had troubles with golden roots . Now days since my bleach over bleach incident (which by the way was done at a salon, not by me) I've found a hairdresser I adore who does an awesome job lifting my hair to the perfect platinum color and it's actually healthy! I'm going to get my roots done this Friday so I'll ask her exactly what she uses (brands and everything) and I'll report back

my hairs probably the same colour as kristins is now..

I use jerome russel powder bleach and 40% peroxide every 3 weeks to do my hair, and once a week wash it with loreal blonding shampoo.  Its in great condition to say i put it through hell every 3 weeks, and is past my bra strap :)

Re matrix.. I use matrix sleek range in my salon, but i find that the products leave a dull build up on hair :( especially the straighening balm :(
