my sis wants to do either rings or shrinkies, but her hair is only a few inches long- she cut it off after 10 yrs of dreds- her stylists wants far to much $$ so we are going to attempt to do the extensions, but wont her natural hair stick up and look absurd? like some strange mowak mullet look? her own hair is straight but coarse, and pretty thick...anyone who knows pls let me know, thanks! also which owuld be best, micro rings or shrinkies....

With really short hair, I don't think you can conceal it will enough with any strand method, especially on thick hair that has that tendency to stick out.

I would recommend a wefted method and go as high up and as far front on the head as possible to avoid the 'mullet' and 'hair hat' look.

Good luck, it sounds like a tough job, even for a pro!

She won't look like a porcupine (you install the rings or links to lie flat along the scalp), but you may be able to see the extensions roots through her hair. I would also recommend a weft method- either latex-bonded glue (a short-term one), microrings with weft, or braided-and-sewn. I believe there are tutorials for all of them linked in the Extensions 101 thread.
