wow! That has put things in a different light. Do you think this is how they collect the cheap hair on the market. The second last clip shown hair that looked like double drawn hair??
I need to say though that anyone wishing to view the clips is recommended to have Broadband as it took about 10 mins to load up on dial-up then zoomed through the clips.
Thanks Angelfruit, thats interesting to know. It looks like some of those people weren't comfortable with loosing their hair which puts things in a different light. I'd hate to think that the hair i buy is being gathered in this way.

Actually, I think this is how they collect expensive hair on the
market. Raw Indian hair is always expensive, and it's even more
expensive when it's processed and sold through companies like Great
Lengths.
AFAIK, the cheap stuff comes from Asia proper and is generally collected and gathered from brushes.
:)

but... does His and Her sell hair from people like that too?!
I cant believe it. H&H says they buy from safe environments
though... I cant believe they would sell ALL of their hair for
money.... and for so little....
Erm, although one may have ethical qualms about wearing someone else's
hair, I'd like to point out that no one in any of those photos looked
like they were being forced to do any of it. No, it might not be fair
trade, but neither are our t-shirts. Not that the t-shirts are
necessarily okay, but hey, let's not think that this is an issue that
only pertains to hair.

Good point & nicely put Rae...

Shel ... I get Bohyme hair from Afrocare. I think I'll give WaWa / AD a
try next time though :-)
Rae - just cause unfair trade happens doesn't make it right. I thik we
should all have the facts and then make up our minds if we want to
partake rather than not having the facts and being and unwilling
participant.
No one is saying don't use human hair ... just know where it comes
from. I'm sure not ALL human hair is collected this way, But this
shocked me. I don't know why I thought the hair was processed in
clinic-like factories, with tech's in white lab coats.
I probably won't stop using human hair ... but I will try other
alternatives as well.
Well, again, I think this is probably the best case scenario of hair
collection, if you know what I mean. As you can see, the man holding
the bundles at the end looks quite proud of the work they've done, and
AFAIK, sacrificing hair to the temple is actually a longstanding part
of the culture. I'm not clear on whether the people know the end result
of the hair they're sacrificing (I've heard conflicting reports on
this), but it would be nice to hear an Indian person's perspective on
this.
I don't mean to sound rude, but under what circumstances did you think it was being collected? Nothing in there surprises or upsets me, it's just.. how things work..

Erm... I don't know. It might not surprise you at all... but I'm quite new to this whole thing, and I've never seen visuals before. I just always pictured *adult* temple monks growing their hair out for sacrifice.. for their religion - less for money. Sorry if you find me so naive, but I reckon I'm not the only person who painted a different picture in my head.
I guess so... Its not like they are chopping off limbs. Alot of people
dont mind being bald actually, and if thats the way they make their
money I guess its ok. My boyfriend said they can live for MONTHS off of
the money they get for that hair, even though it is a small amount. I
guess I am ok with it now! (well
it is still kinda gross looking at the pics... lol well the fact that
that hair is all sweaty and yuky before its turned into nice pretty
locks! lol im picky...)
Angelfruit: no, of course I'm not saying that it's right just because
it happens. Rather, I'm pointing out that it's no different from the
same people slaving away in sweatshops or scraping by selling 50-cent
trinkets to tourists. It's not like they're cutting off limbs or being
forced to sell their hair, but on the other hand, they probably don't
have the economic freedom to say "no, I won't sell my hair" either. I'm
just sayin', it's no more or less ethical than buying sweatshop
clothing. I think people tend to freak out more because it's hair and
it seems more close to the person than an item that they have worked on.
I was never really surprised to learn about the hair trade
either...doesn't anyone else remember that scene in Les Miserables,
where the old lady pays Eponine (or one of the girl characters, anyway)
for her hair?
