QuoteReplyTopic: suggestions?? good or what.... Posted: May 06 2002 at 8:45pm
I am really worried. I have straight long thick waist length hair. I want it cut but want to pretty much keep the length.
I was thinking.......four layers, shortest at my shoulder, and two more layers after that. Does this sound good? How do i explain it to the hairdresser?
I keep my hair tied up in a low ponytail a lot so would this still look good if i layered?
Please help and any suggestions would be apprecaited as im worried yet want to proceed with this look.
All comments welcomed, thanks in advance.

Bad Idea if you want to keep your length. The ponytail will never look right, and if you braid, the braid will never look right. Layering thins your hair down so much the ends will look wispy and see-thru. Then you will feel like you have to chop it up to the next layer. :(
If you want to do something to your hair but still keep the length, get a trim so your ends feel nice and thick, or get some professional highlites maybe.
If you STILL want to cut, maybe some little bangs? Or a few face-framing layers in front? Please think this through, if you are wanting to keep your length.
How about If I just got two layers or so? Perhaps one at the shoulder and the other at the middle of my back? That way the bottom would still be pretty much the same thickness right??

Sounds like you have beautiful hair! However, I know how you feel about wanting to add layers. Sometimes you just want to change something! Layers can be very nice.
Tell your hairdresser that you want to have your hair trimmed, and change the style a bit. Talk a while before they get started, and ask for their advice. That makes them feel like they`re important, so they`ll be working with you, instead of against you. It also helps them understand exactly what you`re looking for.
I always request long layers, and they help me decide where the layers should be. It really helps if the hairdresser has similar hair to you, because they`ll understand how your hair behaves under different conditions. For example, my hair would be very thick and curly if it weren`t so long. So when they cut layers above my shoulders, it causes terrible frizz. The best haircuts I`ve ever had were from people who also had naturally curly hair.
Also, don`t expect miracles on the first haircut. There will be things you won`t like. But just take note of those things so you can avoid them with the next haircut. For instance, be careful with layers any shorter than the shoulder. They don`t stay up in a ponytale very well, and you`ll probably be annoyed with them always in your face.
But thankfully, things like that grow out relatively fast. Anyhow, I hope this helps!
Sounds like you need a change but don`t want to lose length. At first, I`d ask for long layers just to make sure you like it then you add more later. As others said, communicate with your stylist.
