so this is the deal, first of all i am a boy and i am trying to grow my hair to get dreads (dreadlocks). my hair has now only been growing for about a month or so and is about 1 inch long or so. when i had short hair and waves and stuff i was brushing my hair forward and ive been doing so all my life. and now that im growing my hair im now combing it forward. but i tryed coming it up (backwards) to make it look higher but my hair started to hurt and stuff. so what do you suggest i do: comb hair like i did with short hair; comb hair up (backwards); or use pick to pick hair up (backwards) or forward? and what do you think will help hair grow the fastest and stuff?

First of all, this board welcomes people of all ages, so your screen name needs to be changed.... Best, Bob

Uh, breathe, Bob. Maybe he's into basketball.

Try the African-American board for natural hair care advice.

I surely hope so! (lol) About those "hair slaves", eKatherine, my wife already has one, and there may be a few waiting in the wings, should Slave #1 stumble. Bob

If you want short dreads, having them fall forward would be okay because they'd be shorter than your eyes.  But if you want dreads longer than that, you'll probably have to get your hair used to going backwards so they won't be in your face.  It should get used to it after you do it for awhile and not hurt anymore (at least thats how mine reacts if I change the direction I wear it).

If your hair is one inch you can get locs, go to a loctitian who will start you off with either comb coils or 2 strand twists. Or you can just twirl your hair around your finger, I'm thinking you might want to be in the dreadloc section tho.
