Keep in mind that if you have any GLs hair leftover that's in good shape (or if you've bought any extra) you can use that with shrinkies by cutting off the bonds and retipping them. :)

ummm..  I'm just chipping in to say I've really enjoyed the coolness of this thread.  Seriously.  I don't know a group of people in the hair business or interest who are this excellent about sharing their true experiences.

I have some really good hairdresser friends up here in N. MI but none are as brave as you all.

I'd tell you guys any hairdressing secret I knew.     BigCheers!!!!!!

The wands are due this week, I believe. They'll be the same as the ones Doc Locks offers with the dual heat, multi-temp settings. Barring any hidden charges I may get slapped with, there will be a considerable price drop in them as well.

BB you have to purchase shrinkies and hair seperately to use the shrinkie method. There are a few brands of hair out there that get excellent reviews. And they are so much more affordable than the GL hair. A few of them are HisandHer cuticle hair, Glamour Hair, Bohyme and Extensions plus. And one of our veterans on the board here feels that afrocare has a remy hair that is identical to GL hair. Then the shrinkies & remover you can buy from Amm at shrinkies.net. Then of course you would need the heat wand that you can get from Doc locks. Im not sure if she has them yet, but I think Amm is going to start selling the wand too.

If you should decide to start looking at the alternatives just ask away, there are lots of experienced experts and DIYers here on this board that will give you lots of help, advice and answers!

Sherrie , this question is for you : can you get shrinkies in the same quality as great lengths ?

now you guys got me worried , I just took them off a week ago and had them put back on a few days later , my hair was nice and healthy but again thats because i take excellent care of them , and I got for maintenance appts every 3 weeks or so ... also I dont have a full head of them like most poeple need ... I have about 45 to 55 strands in ...

Zape thank you as well for explaining your position ... I am definitely not a hard head so i guess I will be careful about recommanding them to anyone ...

Guess we are even more off topic now hu...

I totally appreciate your knowledge and I guess I have been duped by thinking protein ( LOL) is good for your hair ...

But I guess I am one of the lucky ones as i havent found damage besides for the one i caused to my hair in my earlier days ...

Thanks again

BeachBlone- Yeah, Sherrie put it well. I'm sorry if I sounded a bit curt; being a stylist myself, I have to explain a lot why Great Length's system is not all that they say it to be.

And yes, I will totally give you that a lot of people have success with it- Sherrie, for one, wore it for a while and hasn't had any damage. However, many people -have- had damage, and lots of it, from GLs. So it's statistically inaccurate to say (as the GLs website does) that it's "non-damaging", because while it doesn't damage everyone's hair, it -does- cause damage. Kinda like a serial killer...maybe they don't kill every single person they see, but they do still kill people, so that makes them a killer. (Pardon the morbid analogy; I've been reading too much Bret Easton Ellis.)

That's why I won't use, or recommend, GL or any fusion system; it may work great for some people, but even if there's only one person whose hair gets trashed I don't want to be responsible for that. And there's so many other systems out there, with such a better track record, why take chances? That's how I feel, anyway.

Oh jeez, I just got even more off-topic, didn't I.

most all bonds are glue, its not your fault, just misinformation.  Hair companies will do anything to stay away from the word "glue"

its a fusion bond I believe, and if taken down carefully wont harm hair too much.  I myself am nervous around fusion though, because last time my hair got chewed up, but I  was thinking of a shrinkie/fusion combo in the near future

Edit: metal girl - its a trate most people suffer from, they become "fanboys" of certain products and damned if their opinion about it isnt the right one!  Im the same way about my playstation 2 though, it is the best, peroid

Seriously.... why do people ask when they already "know" the answer.  I have a friend who is a stylist out west that was all hopped up about GL two years ago.... made piles of money.... and then about 1 year ago, she stopped hyping it and have started talking about other methods for long term clients.

When I asked what was up, I got the long side-ways glance and they  said, oh we still really like it but we're looking for something else for "long term" clients.

So I think she started seeing damage, and has been easing out of it before someone gets hurt.

It's funny, about the misinformation that GL's puts out.

I had a call yesterday from a woman seeking someone to redo her GL extensions.  I told her I do about 5 different methods, but not GL, because in my opinion they are way overpriced and damaging.  This woman started arguing with me about why I feel that way!  I told her I have personally seen the damage it does, and I won't do an extension method where the client can't reuse the hair (expect for the synth hair-it's so cheap that new hair isn't a problem)

Anyway, she kept pressing the issue, saying "well if it's so bad, why do they use it on Extreme Makeover...."  I responded that GL is a huge company and can afford to advertise and push their product, etc, it's not that they are the best, it's that they are good at their marketing hype!

Anyway, you know what, the beotch ended up hanging up on me!  Well, she did me a favor, because I would never want someone like that for a client anyway!

Oh and just to let you know BB. If any of us sounded rude, it wasnt intended towards you. Its just that weve seen the horrors with some of these methods that 'claim' to be so 'non damaging'. Weve heard the stories over and over.....some of the board members here have had some really tramatic experiences with some of these methods. So alot of us have some really strong opinions.

These couple of companies in particular, put out so much hype, false and misleading information that its just sickening. And for someone who doesnt know any better, can really think its great information. And unforrtunately alot of people dont find out the reality until its too late, after they have spent thousands of dollars and damaged hair.

I will say that I agree with you on removal. I too wear fusion extensions, and the key to no/little damage is really careful sectioning to start with and careful and patient removal. Ive experienced only slight damage from fusion, but my hair is crappy, and damaged from coloring and highlighting so the fusion really doesnt make it any worse! Although, I would never recommend fusion to anyone cause I know what it can do and that there are so many better alternatives! Ive just switched to shrinkies and I LOVE them! So much better than fusion!

Sherry I have to tell you after reading the threads I am not looking at them the same way . I , however have experienced them for 4 years and my hair is intact because I maintain them so well and I have them VERY CAREFULLY Removed .

But now , I do feel cheated as I really thought the bond being protein and all was NOT AT ALL CONSIDERED GLUE ...

Thank you guys for explaining it all ...

PS: I was saying you got nasty ( NOT AT ALL )

Like Rae said, there's lots of info. here on PlastikHaar, so you can do a search and you'll get lots of info. That said, there are several ways to curl the haar, but velvet-covered hot rollers are my favorite. It doesn't feel or look *exactly* like human, but most people are very suprised when I tell them it's synth. And you can't beat the price: $13 per bag!

The thing about methods like GLs is that, while the hair is good, the cost per application, at least for me, was $2,500. I needed to redo them every three months (and you shouldn't let them go longer than that), and the hair isn't reusable, so we're talking $10,000 a year. Plus, it destroyed my real hair. Four applications of pinchbraids with PH at a salon, however, comes to $1,600 (an $8,400 savings!!). This is even cheaper if you DIY with shrinkies or extendtubes. Plus, the method is much gentler, and you can resuse the hair if you want.

Just to give you an idea of the DIY cost, let's say you use new hair each time, 3 bags of it. PlastikHaar will cost you roughly $120 a year. For shrinkies, you can get 800 (a year's worth, give or take) from shrinkies.net for $40, plus a $6 bottle of remover, plus Doc's wand at $100. That's a whole year's worth of hair and supplies for less than $300. Extendtube costs are about the same.

:)

Its not your fault, thats what Great Lengths told you. They, and some of other big branded names of extension methods put out alot of misleading information.

You know whats gets me is that some of these big named companies that put out all this misleading information about their method being the best, no damage etc...etc....are actually some of the worst and the most expensive to boot!

Kris: there's a lot of Plasikhaar talk on this forum- try doing a search on the board for Plastikhaar, especially "curling Plastikhaar"- we had an entire thread on curling PH and other synths not very long ago, and many people in various threads have given their opinion on how PH feels. There's a lot of information already contained in the back pages of the forum. :)
