QuoteReplyTopic: Plastikhaar vs. Prohair- whats the diff? Posted: May 30 2005 at 9:35pm
Hey Rae :)
I kept hearing so much about this forum that I had to join! It's much more user friendly for me than the Quinnster board....honestly, I've never participated over there because the black backgrounds and neon text drive me crazy [I feel like such an old lady complaining about backgrounds and text color...heh]
Spiraled curl is the very tight curls. I'm sure if you can reset the curl after 9 weeks and had no problem, than that Prohair "do not curl after 2 weeks" theory must be wrong. I hate it when these hair companies scare me like that.
Well, I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "spiral curled." But in
general, I don't curl my PH or Dome at all within the first few weeks,
because I order the PH 50mm and the Dome Classic, both of which stay
wavy for about 2 weeks (or one wash). Then, after the second wash (at
the two week point), I reset it with velvet-covered hot rollers and
rawk that look till the next wash. And then, at 3 or 4 weeks or so,
I'll blow out the ends to make them smooth and then reset it again.
I've curled the hair at 9 weeks, and it was fine.
I used a curling iron on my first PlastikHaar batch, after testing the
iron and the heat (some irons are just too damned hot or inconsistent).
I curled it while wet. It works quite well, but you really have to be
careful because the risk of singeing the hair is pretty good otherwise;
the curl it creates is very stubborn (which is a good thing if you like
it). But generally, I just use the hot rollers instead, although I have
a set of jumbo Velcro rollers, which I'm planning to test with the
blow-dryer cap in a few weeks. I'll post pics afterward.
Thanks girls for being so helpful, so it all boils down to
preferences. Good to know there's a lot of choices!
Rae- great pics!
What ProStyles told me, is to change the curl of the synth only
within 2 weeks after installing.
So if I installed the natural body, my client cannot spiral curl it
after 2 weeks. They say; " only change its texture while it's
still fresh"
Have you girls spiral curled straight synth after 2 weeks?
{Sorry for sounding so stupid, I wish I could do more practice,
but synth is not so popular with my clients }
hmmm yep!
actually there is ONLY japanese kanekalon!
my supplier told me that they have tried to find out another
raw material since japan is an expensiv country.
so i know theres a korean kanekalon copy and theres a chinese
kanekalon copy. but both arent that good as the japanese stuff.
chinese stuff is fine for dreading : )
but i actually worn a whole head of chinese peperoni straight myself
and it holded up very good. but again....it all depens : )
I agree with Mocha. There's no "good batch"/"bad batch" problem; it's
just that certain shades look more "real" than others (at least when
they're first installed). For example, the Perlweiss I use (a very
white blonde) is less shiny than the Satin Blonde (but this is also
true of Dome's comparable colors--White and Light Blonde). Some just
seem to reflect more light initially than others.
With all these shades (and brands), the shine subsides considerably
after few washes. AFAIK, the only difference in quality among the PH
fibers is that the Japanese monofiber is better than the Chinese
monofiber (that said, I think Sara is phasing out the Chinese ones
anyway).
Dome's curls are slightly bouncier out of the bag than PH's, which are
a bit more natural-looking, but after one wash, it's really all the
same.
I've never worn Prostyles, but I can say that I think PlastikHaar is as
good quality, if not better, than Dome, which is also good, imo.
P.S. I'm 80% sure that dome monofibre is the
same as trimco.. someone please correct me if I'm mistaken.. I'm pretty
sure Dome is Europe and Trimco is usa for the same hair.
Noop. They're definitely not the same company; Dome even has a US side
already, so it wouldn't make sense to have a second company for US
sales. The corporate differences are huge, too; Dome is very
online-savvy and responsive via email, and Trimco, well, you can barely
even get in touch with them by phone. The only way I know how to get
Trimco hair is ordering from Hairpolice. (On that subject; omg,
Heather's here! Rawk!)
The hair is different too. Dome's textures always come coiled up, so
they have a slight wave, whereas Trimco is always straight. The
quantities and packaging are totally different (for one, Trimco bags
are 9oz, and Dome's are 3.5) and Trimco is a way better price. Also,
Dome always feels silky, but Trimco fibers seem a little thicker- as in
the bag, it feels kind of coarse. It feels silkier once you wear it,
but...I dunno, I'm gonna test-drive some Trimco myself in a few weeks
to see.
As far as heat-resistance goes; this photo
is of curls done in blue Dome Prolin, pink Plastikhaar, and white
Trimco, all with a curling iron on low heat and about the same amount
of time. They came out pretty much all the same, as you can see. The
first photo is just after curling, and the second photo is with the curls brushed so they separate.
hmmm that doenst really matter if its a fancy or a natural colour...
and i also cant really say wich were "better" as they are just different.
some seem more matt and less shiny...wich isnt necessary a bad thing
also, i got a lot of costumers that using my hair for dreads aswell..
so maybe some colours might be better dreads some less...
it all really depens on WHAT kind of hair you want.
guess theres not really a guideline, more a "find out yourself" thingy : )
Hi Sara; First I'd like to say your company is very timely in response to paypal ordering. I wish more hair suppliers were the same. Second, I really appreciate your membership in this forum.
Ok so now we know that Plastikhaar & Prohair have the: "same supplier" "same kind of hair" "same kanekalon manufacturar."
means the same hair! {Bingo!} Lisa, you said that too!
Sara; I don't understand one thing, please, "some colours seem to be better quality then others."Sara, so when ordering colours, which colours are better the natural or the rainbow?
I have felt some PH that felt rough and got frizzy quickly, and other colors that felt silky. To me, out of the bag, Prohair felt super silky and looked pretty, but I haven't worn it myself yet.
My friend, whom I did a full head install two weeks ago, says the Prohair natural body went straight already. (but just between you and me, and however many hundreds of others who may be reading this... I think she is super hard on her hair and not treating it right)
actually i got the same supplier as prohair..
so if you buy THE SAME colours it is exactly the same kind of hair
from the same kanekalon manufacturar.
BUT my supplier has so many kanekalon suppliers.
so thats why some colours seem to be better quality then others.
and i agree with bridget: the longer the hair is, the more easy it tangles.
every kanekalon manufacturar seems to have their own formula
to produce kanekalon. so some are better some less...
Well. . .it just so happens that I have Prohair and PH in my hair, mixed together, side-by-side, as we speak. (What else is new?)
The lady who installed the Prohair said it performed better than PlastikHaar (i.e. that it had 'memory' and would retain curl after washing) and she had some interesting colors in stock that she wanted to mix in so of course I agreed! Anyway her assessment is simply not true in my experience.
I like the PlastikHaar better (the 50mm). It seems to have more 'body' to it. It's not heavier, but, for example, when I put the big hot rollers in my hair, the PH responds better and looks more vavoom-ish. The Prohair is much straighter and it's supposedly the same 'wave'.
I'm suprised that the hairpolice use Trimco almost exclusively, too. I
haven't heard of problems with the quality much, but the textures (only
straight) and lengths are so limited. They should really contact Sara.
:)
Hey if anybody is in the NYC, NJ, PA area and would like to do each other's hair extensions, let me know! We'll save tons of money on each other and at the same time experiment with some cool stuff!
P.S. I'm 80% sure that dome monofibre is the same as trimco.. someone please correct me if I'm mistaken.. I'm pretty sure Dome is Europe and Trimco is usa for the same hair.
My experience with those two are that they are VERY not the same! Trimco isn't all that great, really - it's coarse and has zero heat tolerance, whereas Dome is silkier like PH and has a better heat tolerance. Trimco...really, the folks at Hairpolice need to upgrade. There are much better kanekalons out there than Trimco nowadays.

Charlene - I've worked with Dome, Prohair, Trimco, and a little bit of PH. I think the Dome and Prostyles tend to be a bit shiny and barbie-ish. I think some of the PH colors start off shiny but look more natural after washing. I like Trimco because it matches human hair the most, but the quality on certain colors hasn't been the best lately and they don't have different textures. I'm interested in trying the PH out on myself, but it probably wont be for a while....I already have my next few hairstyles picked out ;)
Scotchyroo - I'm pretty sure that Prostyles / Prohair splintered off from Dome....but I could be wrong.
Between Prohair and Trimco, you should be able to mix any color, it's just convenient that it's already premixed with PH. But also, I'm sure I'd end up mixing premixed colors too, out of habit ;)
Thanks girls, I read Bridget says Prohair is slightly better, but I
can't wait to try PH! I love their colors too!
Also thanks for the info about synth maintenance.
Yeah, Plastikhaar is cheaper than Prohair and Prohair is
cheaper than the Dome 'Prolin'.
