(Acquired) Proximal trichorrhexis nodosa occurs in Blacks.Perms and selenium sulfide[some dandruff shampoos contains selenium sulfide] and some genetic disorders can cause this,(acquired) proximal trichorrhexis nodosa causes the hair to fracture and fall out near the scalp. Please press search and read my post fractured hairs.Perms don't cause genetic disorders, proximal trichorrhexis nodosa can be genetic or caused by relaxers, when it's not genetic it's acquired proximal trichorrhexis nodosa.Guanidine hydroxide[no lye] or sodium hydroxide[lye] and ammonium thioglycate[permanent wave and straightener] can cause acquired proximal trichorrhexis nodosa.

Do all perms contain this chemical ?What is it's purpose to be in perms if it causes something tramatic as genetic disorders or hair and/or hairloss?P.S. applause for your  info.

FYI, "proximal trichorrhexis nodosa" is a big, fancy word for the little white dots that form on damaged hair that is about to break off. The more damage, the more of this you get. This is typical damage, just like splits. Nothing exotic about it.

Lye relaxers are more damaging than the others listed, and so cause more of this. (doh)

Some people's hair gets it more than others - the "genetic" factor? All I can say is I'm clearly white, with silky European-type hair, and I have white dots all over my ends.

i know i have to stop relaxing someday. especially since i come from a family with a history of thin hair.....all this is so confusing. everyone is switching to lye cos its more gentle to the hair. maybe it would be better to use no-lye then take better care of the hair so as not to suffer from the long term effects of lye relaxers. Did that make any sense? sorry is too early in the morning for me

Why are people just taking this at face value with no questions??? And going as far as saying it's conformation!!!!

1.  Where did this info come from?  Link?  Article?  ANYTHING?!!!!??

2.  If it causes this much damage/problems, why hasn't there been any info on it on tv?  ABC, CBS, Primetime, Dateline, heck BET????

I'm lookin at the ingredients of a Hawaiian Silky relaxer.  It does not have selenium sulfide in it!!!!  Heck, I'll go as far to say that MOST if not ALL relaxers don't contain this ingredient!!!

Please, people, don't let big words trick you into believing that a person actually knows what they're talking about!!  Especially without any background info? Nothing to back up the statements???  For heavens sake, find out for yourselves!

I agree with Callalily 100% We have to educate ourselves about claims/ideas to separate the truth from the untruths.  Jean inspired me to do some research of my own and in doing so, I think I found the article she posted the info from.

http://www.emedicine.com/derm/topic896.htm

In the article it says that the proximal trich...nodosa (white dots along the shaft as ekatherine said) are caused by: chemicals, brushing, combing, shampooing, heat, exposure to salt water, scratching, SUMMERTIME . . . as you can see ANY hair manipulation and even the change to summertime can trigger this problem!  You name it, it can cause this problem!  It is pretty much the severity level of a split end.

It is called distal trich nodosa in Caucasian and Asian people. Distal because the white dots happen further down the shaft, proximal for us b/c it occurs higher up the shaft more frequently.  It is nothing serious at all . . . and is common in almost any person who does anything to their hair.

If I am reading correctly Jean32's post said that perms, selenium sulfide, AND some genetic problems can cause these white dots (proximal . . . nodosa) . . . NOT that perms cause genetic problems.

The real problem I have with these posts is that Jean32 is repeatedly posting the same thing.  About four months ago, Jean made...oh, say, fifteen posts in a row saying that PVCs damage hair, and that heat caused bubble hair.  Simple enough.

Now the posts have gotten so complex that if you don't know the terminology, it looks impressive.  If you do know what all the big words men, you realize it's the same posts from four months ago!

What would be more helpful that telling us that we're damaging our hair repeatedly, would be to tell us how to prevent it.  Without claiming that all of the damage can be solved by using one particular product, preferably.

jean32 loves factoids, and never does follow-up research before posting. She (?) posts these same cryptic and somewhat misleading pieces of info all over the boards and never responds.

I don't respond to Jean on either pm or on the boards. Also, I think she pm's from another name as well.

I use Hawaian Silky and I agree with Callalily.  I'm going to do research on perms and find out more about it.
